Service is a large part of character development, and character development is a large part of Charis. During Re-creation last month, students made bracelets that our missionaries will take to boys and girls all over the world.

Slaves are trained for tasks. Free people are educated in the liberal arts.

Every parent knows the day is coming when you will not be there to explain, assign, and correct. The question is: what will your child do then? Will he be a slave to a teacher, or will he be the kind of person that can pick up any book, at any time, and teach himself?

The "liberal" in liberal arts refers to the kind of education that sets men free.

People of valor are not born. They're forged.

Last Saturday at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, a ten-year-old boy was swept into ten-foot surf. A sixteen-year-old lifeguard named Ryder Williams went in after him. The waves drove them both under, again and again, and Ryder would not let go. He told his father afterward there was no way he was going to. He brought the boy to shore alive, and the video has now made its way around the country — even to the White House.

The word valor refers to "strength of mind in regard to danger; that quality which enables a man to encounter danger with firmness; personal bravery; courage; intrepidity; prowess."

Strength of mind. Mark that. Ryder was not born a child of valor. No one is. He was trained into one — the drills, the conditioning, the discipline, the thousand unseen hours that shaped body and soul until, when the wave came, holding on was simply who he was. Courage is not an impulse. It is a habit of the soul, formed long before the moment that reveals it.

Much of our culture has traded the pursuit of character for the pursuit of pleasure. Comfort now; formation never. And then we wonder why young people of valor seem rare.

They are not rare because our children lack the capacity. They are rare because we expect far too little from our children.

Children must be formed for discipline, for sacrifice, for strength of mind in the face of danger. That is what real education is: not the filling of a mind only, but the shaping of a soul.

Thank God for Ryder Williams. May we raise a generation like him.

Your five-year-old colors a ziggurat.

Your fourth grader narrates the crossing of the Red Sea.

Your senior argues that Rome didn't fall so much as quit.

And at six o'clock, all three sit down at the same table with something to say to each other.

Ancient history at Charis — Creation to the fall of Rome, Pre-K through twelfth, all year, together.

Some customs look old-fashioned only because we stopped keeping them, but teaching courtesy is about more than "good manners." Courtesy sits in the realm of justice—rendering to each what is owed. Charis teaches children to give honor to whom honor is due: to God, to parents, to those in authority, to their elders, and to ladies young and old.

We are not after quiet children. Quiet is easy to obtain and worth very little. We are after children who notice other people — who honor those they can see, and so learn to honor the One they cannot.

"Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed." ~Romans 13:7 (ESV)
