Your vitamin D level is a receipt. Proof that light hit your skin.
The largest review of this question was 290 cohort studies, 172 randomized trials found the same split every time. People with low vitamin D get sicker. People given vitamin D in a capsule don’t get better. Thirty-four of those trials started with people who were genuinely deficient. Still nothing. (Autier et al., Lancet Diabetes Endocrinol 2014 — PMID 24622671. Look it up yourself.)
When UVB hits cholesterol in your skin, vitamin D is one product. You also make a dozen vitamin D-like molecules, plus POMC which is a prohormone that cleaves into ten more: the ones that tan you, regulate your appetite, lower your blood pressure, calm your immune system, and put you in a good mood!
The capsule gives you one. The sun gives you all of them.
That review was non-skeletal outcomes. For bone, the supplement works, rickets, osteomalacia and fracture in frail elderly and just in those cases D supplements correct them. What it doesn’t do is deliver what sunlight delivers everywhere else in the body.
So why do we still test?
Because a readout is worth reading, ONLY if someone teaches you how to read it and use it correctly!
We run 97 biomarkers. Then we teach you to interpret them through biophysics and circadian biology.
Your vitamin D as a record of light. Your labs as a map of the signals your environment has been sending your cells. Not a number to chase into range. Not a protocol handed down by an institution that profits from your confusion.
Your biology, decentralized. Read by you.
