**“Why did I get decompression sickness (DCS) even though I stayed within my computer’s no-decompression limit (NDL)?”**

This question is frequently asked of DAN’s medical team. A common misconception is that staying within your dive computer’s NDL guarantees protection from DCS.

Dive computers use algorithms to estimate decompression stress based on factors like depth, time, and breathing gas. However, these mathematical models have their limitations; they are influenced by the specific variables they measure and the assumptions they are based on. Notably, they do not fully consider various biological and situational factors that can impact decompression stress, such as physical exertion, thermal stress, and individual physiological differences.

Additionally, it’s important to understand that there is no universal decompression algorithm. Different dive computers may provide noticeably different NDLs and guidance for the same dive profile.

Remember that while the risk of DCS is probabilistic, it generally increases as divers approach their NDLs. To further reduce this risk, many divers incorporate additional safety margins into their dive plans. This can be done by adjusting NDL parameters using conservative computer settings or gradient factors, staying well below their NDLs, lengthening safety stops, and prioritizing fitness to dive.

While dive computers are effective tools, the safest dives result from combining technological guidance with knowledge, sound judgment, and conservative dive planning and practices.

Getting Ready To Go On A Dive Trip, OR Has It Been Awhile Since You Last Dive

🤿 YOUR CERTIFICATION DOESN’T EXPIRE — BUT YOUR SKILLS CAN!

A scuba certification card proves you completed your training. But it doesn’t tell the whole story.

How many dives have you done? When was your last dive? Have you recently experienced current, low visibility, cold water, deep diving, or challenging boat conditions?

Your logbook tells the story your certification card can’t.

If you’ve been out of the water for a while, a refresher or checkout dive isn’t a punishment—it’s an opportunity to rebuild confidence, refresh essential skills, and make sure you’re truly ready for the conditions you’re about to encounter.

Remember: being certified doesn’t automatically mean you’re ready for every dive.

Stay current. Practice your skills. Be honest about your experience. And never let pride keep you from taking a refresher when you need one.

🌊 The goal isn’t just to be certified. The goal is to be a confident, comfortable, and capable diver.
