Many teachers make the mistake of focusing on the music first, the student second. The problem is, students won't care about piano lessons until they're fully "bought-in."
How do you do this? Focus on the: Why - What - How.
This is the key to motivation - but don't rely on it (discipline is better).

"People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care ... about them!" - Zig Ziglar

I don't really hate the idea of motivation, just how most people think of it. For instance, I hear this from time to time: "I don't know what to do to get him to practice, he's just not motivated."
I don't blame them, many of these ideas are drilled into us at a young age.
Fortunately, I grew up with parents who instilled a solid work ethic in me. You gotta show up to work every day.
No matter what.
For example: I LOVE my job, but I'm not always "motivated" to teach every day. The I remember I need to get PAID (money matters).
And that's why motivation is such a bad "strategy." Because you can't depend on it.
The better thing to focus on is discipline. That way, you're not affected by current circumstances and you don't let emotions or feelings get in the way.
But I admit, motivation is pretty important in the beginning.
The hard (impossible) thing is to keep it going consistently. But by then, hopefully you or your students have developed enough discipline to continue.
So in today's blog post I share what I've learned about motivation and how to spark motivation in piano students.
Hope to see you there!
