Peconic Community School Peconic Community School is an independent progressive school for students age 3-Grade 8.

The school nurtures children’s natural curiosity, imagination and inclination for creativity and play; and integrates the land, environment and community through the unique landscape of the North Fork, to inspire a life-long pursuit of knowledge, to build an awareness of self and the surrounding world, and to foster excellence in math, science, arts and humanities.

Screen-free to Grade 3. Tech-intentional through Grade 8. PCS students are learning to connect, not click. There’s a different kind of attention and presence that comes from being in the real world, a noticing and wonder that an iPad in Kindergarten just can’t inspire.

That’s why we dedicate so much of our learning time to real-life experiences that happen out in the field, by the side of a community expert or in our students’ own hands. Every meaningful project at PCS starts there, with a child who has looked closely and wants to know more. 

When students begin using devices in Grade 3 for research, it’s in service to that curiosity: helping students dig into a question, find their own answers and bring their ideas to life. Screens are an inevitable part of our children’s futures, but they don’t need to set the pace of childhood.

We’re happy to talk more about how real-world learning at PCS cultivates the curiosity and connection that build the thinking skills students need in an increasingly tech-laden world. Greenport artist Anne Gable walks us through the printmaking workshops she facilitated for students in Early Childhood through Grade 8, using lines, shapes and colors to create abstractions inspired by the geometrics in aerial photos of local farm fields. This trimester’s integrated art study brings working artists from the community into our classrooms to introduce their mediums and methods in projects aligned with our Agriculture unit.

Today we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day by honoring the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous communities past and present. It’s a day to learn from the knowledge and wisdom that have shaped this land for thousands of years. We’re reminded to respect and uplift Indigenous voices, and to recognize the enduring resilience of Indigenous peoples everywhere. Let’s commit to listening deeply and showing up as better allies and learners.

In honor of Curriculum Night, we’re revisiting a common parent question: what do math and literacy look like at a project-based school? These are core skill areas where student strengths and challenges are often most visible. Here’s how we meet student needs.

• In addition to being integrated into our thematic trimester units, math and literacy learning happens every day in dedicated learning blocks. These are crucial tools for advanced learning, and students deserve dedicated time and instruction to help them grow into confident, capable mathematicians, readers and writers.

• Daily learning blocks target core competencies through: whole class instruction, small group work, and individual practice.

• Our math and literacy scopes and sequences have been written in-house to align with NY State Next Generation Learning Standards. Because we integrate math and literacy into our trimester units as well, our students often exceed state benchmarks.

• Math at PCS balances fluency in traditional algorithms and computations, conceptual understanding and real problem-solving applications.

• Literacy utilizes research-based decoding and phonemic strategies for emergent readers and builds facility in reading comprehension, grammar conventions and writing craft and structure through the older grades.

• Structuring small group work into each day’s literacy and math blocks lets facilitators differentiate instruction and offer support and challenge according to each child’s needs.

PCS families, we’re looking forward to welcoming you back to campus Thursday evening to share the thinking behind how we teach and learn at PCS: our mission, our commitment to integrated, hands-on learning and how the North Fork and our local community shape the work students do each day. 

Our Director of Teaching and Learning, Shannon Timoney, will offer a big-picture overview of PCS curriculum before families head into classrooms to hear how the pieces of a PCS education connect across grades.

Facilitator will introduce their learning spaces and walk families through what the year will look like for children, including:

• Community and classroom culture
• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Integrated Units
• A typical day and week
• Communication/the home-school connection

We’re really looking forward to connecting with families around our PCS curriculum. We’ll see you tomorrow night!

This trimester we’re expanding the ways our students encounter artists, materials and creative practices by bringing community artists into the classroom throughout the fall. Students are learning methods, techniques and new ways of seeing directly from local working artists who are leading workshops that integrate with our Agriculture Unit. 

It’s the same expert-led model that brings our Integrated Units to life and reflects what matters most to us as a community school: learning through real experience, connecting with working professionals from our own backyard and seeing the North Fork itself as an extension of the classroom.

Many thanks to Melissa Hyatt | Watercolor Artist for bringing our watercolor technique to the next level! Students across grade levels learned the finer points of color mixing, layering and creating value as they worked on recreating an iconic local barn.

✨ Our first First Friday! We were so happy to welcome families into the classrooms this morning for a first look at the spaces, people and work that will shape their children’s year.

Students were excited to pull their families over to meet their facilitators, show them around their new classrooms, flip through the first pages of their journals and notebooks, and check out the projects starting to go up on the walls. These early visits give families a window into the rooms, routines and relationships their children are settling into, and a chance to begin the year as partners in their learning.

We’re so grateful to all of the family members who were able to be here this morning. Your presence matters more than you might realize. When you show up curious and interested in what’s happening in these rooms, you’re telling your child(ren) that their ideas, their effort and their growth are worth paying attention to. Starting the year with that message is so powerful.

Thank you for being engaged partners in this work. We’re looking forward to a year of learning together.
