Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. But why do we celebrate an instrument of suffering and death?
⁣
Because through Jesus Christ, the Cross became something entirely different. What was once a symbol of humiliation and defeat became the instrument of our salvation; the place where sin was conquered, death was defeated and the depth of God's love for us was revealed.
⁣
The feast also has ancient roots, recalling the discovery of the True Cross in Jerusalem and the dedication of churches built at the sites of Christ's Crucifixion and Resurrection.
⁣
Through the Cross, Christ transformed death into life and defeat into victory.

Today the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Teresa of Calcutta, a modern-day saint who was a powerful witness to seeing Christ in the poorest and most forgotten.
⁣
Mother Teresa was known to do small things with great love. She served the sick, the dying and the marginalized with extraordinary tenderness because she believed that in each person, she was serving Jesus Himself.
⁣
Her example challenges us to look more closely at the people God places in front of us each day and ask: How can I love Christ in this person?

Just yesterday, the Church celebrated St. Monica, the mother who prayed faithfully for years for the conversion of her son. Today, we celebrate that son: St. Augustine of Hippo, bishop and doctor of the Church.

Augustine spent years searching for happiness and truth far from the Christian faith, but through God's grace, and the persistent prayers of his mother, his life was transformed. He became one of the greatest theologians and most influential saints in the history of the Church.

For years, St. Monica prayed for her son, Augustine, who had wandered far from the faith. She never gave up hope, trusting that God was still at work in his heart. Her prayers were answered, and Augustine not only returned to Christ but became one of the greatest saints and Doctors of the Church.

If someone you love has drifted from the faith, don't lose heart. Keep praying. God hears every prayer, and His timing is always perfect.
⁣
