"I used the Dolezal example in class today to clarify what our text means by, race/class/gender matrix of power and domination (Andersen and Hill Collins 2014). This story falls right on the nature/nurture line and the color line as both a social construction (i.e. "race is a social construction") and a historically politically charged concept. Students tend to think in a presentist mode, but when you bring the historical idea of blackface into the discussion they start to understand why members of the black community are angry about what she has done with her identity. Blacks can't "pass as white" but whites can "pass as black" due to the one drop rule. As one student said, she took an opportunity that a black person could have taken: professor of Africana Studies; NAACP leadership..."
