If you own a firearm or care about someone who does then you should have them read or listen to this book by Claude Werner, The Tactical Professor. I had forgotten that there has been an "album" available on Amazon for the past ten years.
$10 for the album or $5 for a PDF version. Both are money well spent.

This book is not about techniques of shooting fi****ms; it is about Decision Making, specifically Bad Decision Making. Our Mindset leads to our Decisions. Our Decisions lead to our Actions. Our Actions lead to our Outcomes. This sequence controls our

Whether you already own a shotgun, are thinking about a shotgun, and especially if you think shotguns are outdated, I highly recommend you watch this video.
Aq is as solid as they come. Take advantage of his experience as well as the nuggets he drops from others who really know their way around the shotgun.
If you don't like Shotguns, you will after this video.

A tragic story out of Columbus Georgia is a stark reminder for those who have a gun for self defense at home.
That "bump in the night" is typically NOT an intruder, many times it is:
A son or daughter sneaking back into the house.
A spouse, son or daughter, who wants to surprise you by coming home early.
Or in this tragic case, a roommate coming in late at night and who probably did not want to disturb you by calling in advance.
You MUST identify your target before shooting. As Claude Werner has long advocated, calling out "WHO'S THERE" would have saved many a life.
If you are the person coming in late at night, CALL AHEAD! And no, " I sent them a text" is not good enough UNLESS you receive a reply.

The end of last night's playoff game between the Dodgers and the Phillies reminded me about the effects of stress on performance.
Bottom of the ninth, two outs, tying run on 3rd base. Routine ground ball to 2nd baseman. All you need is a simple throw to first base. A play that this player has maded thousands of times in the past. Watch the video to see what happens.

I continue to be amused by folks who think their training makes them immune to these issues becasue they have trained enough to avoid it. That includes:
Not needing to "tap rack" instead of just "rack" on a failure to fire
Losing the dot.
Fumbling the draw.
Failing to rack the slide to chamber a round. (IDF, take note)
Forgetting to disengage the safety.
Having your finger on the trigger when it is not supposed to be.
Yes, you need to train. You need to stress test your training as much as you reasonably and responsibly can. Just understand that stuff does happen. That is why your skills need to be not just fast, but also reliable, robust and repeatable.
As Claude Werner says" "In every encounter there is an element of risk".
Thank goodness Freddie Freeman knew how to improvise, adapt, and overcome. ;-)

The Cognitive Conclave is returning to Martin Georgia in October!
This class only comes around every couple of years or so and, with the addition of John Holschen,it will be even better than before. Now you get four nationally recognized trainers in one location.
This will be a great class for those who conceal carry. It will force you to think while shooting, identify your targets, decide how and when to shoot and much more. It will NOT be a class where you execute the same target 100 times per day.
As the class description mentions this is not a class for beginners. On the other hand you do not need to be SEAL Team 6 to attend either.
If you are one of my students and wondering if you are ready for this class just reach out to me. I will give you an honest answer.

Did Santa bring you a new shotgun or revolver for Christmas? Do not have either of those but want to learn more about them? I will be conducting my Defensive Shotgun and Defensive Revolver classes next Saturday and Sunday, respectively, at Johns Creek Indoor Gun Range.
I can provide loaners if required and will provide ammo at my cost if you need that as well.
