Margie put together a small display in memory of Dolly Parton that contains the few items that are available in the Learning Commons Library. Dolly died yesterday, August 25th at the age of 80, after a brief battle with cancer. She had battled other health issues as well. Dolly was a true national treasure, and she will be remembered for a long time. She was a songwriter, singer, author, actor, savvy businesswoman, a major philanthropist, and so much more. Her Imagination Library has given away over 300 million books to children to encourage them to read. The library has two books and two DVDs that may be signed out. If you want to remember Dolly in a special way, you can donate to her Imagination Library at https://imaginationlibrary.com/

Margie put together a fun display about the history of technology. This display was inspired by a donation from Paul Haberlein, former ACM VP of Finance, of the very first IBM personal computer that was released in 1981. Margie got the idea of tracing the history of both computers (including handheld devices) and telephones. There is a timeline with the development of the different technologies. Most traditional age college students weren't even alive when many of these technologies were developed. It will surprise you when you realize how long ago some of these technologies were developed! Stop by the library and check out the display!

On this day in 1969, Neil Armstrong made history by being the first person to walk on the moon as part of the Apollo 11 mission. On July 20, 1969 the world watched as Armstrong took the first step and uttered the famous words: "That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind." Neil Armstrong was the one who took most of the photos on the moon, but this is one of the rare ones that Buzz Aldrin took of him. If you want to learn more about Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11, the library has these DVDs that may be checked out:

First man DVD

First man on the moon DVD

With the 4th of July holiday coming up, we want to let everyone know that Allegany College of Maryland will be closed tomorrow in observance of the holiday. The Learning Commons Library will reopen on Monday, July 6 with our regular summer hours of 8:00 am-7:00 pm. The library is open today (7/2) until 4:30. With the excessive heat, make sure you stay indoors as much as possible and drink plenty of water if you're outside. And for your safety, leave the fireworks to the experts! Have a great holiday, everyone!

Margie has put together two special displays that will be up in the Learning Commons Library through at least the 4th of July. She did a Memorial Day display that honors family members of ACM faculty and staff who were killed during World War II. That display is now around the back of the D-Day/World War II display that honors family members of ACM faculty and staff who returned home no matter where they served during the war. Some of those who submitted photos included great stories about their family members, so Margie put together a handout will those and all the other service members who are honored on the display. There are also books and DVDs that are available for check-out. Stop by the library and check out the display!

Margie put together a special Memorial Day tribute in the Learning Commons Library. The display honors relatives of faculty/staff who were killed during World War II. She is also working on a special D-Day/World War II display for all those who served during the war. The Memorial Day Display will stay up along with the D-Day display, which hopefully will be finished by D-Day on June 6th. Stop by the library and check out the display!
