***The Founder of the Cumberland School Volunteers is Remembered for Her Persistence and Commitment to the Students of Cumberland.***
๐๐ซ๐๐
When ten parents approached the Cumberland School Administration in 1967 to explore the possibility of allowing parent volunteers in the schools, the response was less than enthusiastic. Reluctant to start a โrevolutionaryโ practice, one school committee member declared, โno civilians in our schools.โ
Indeed, that was his intention!
The idea of using volunteers in the Cumberland schools was initiated by Margaret-Ann Gardner, who had been involved with the Lippitt Hill Tutorial program in Providence. This experience allowed her to see the tremendous benefit gained by having parent volunteers available to the schools and students of Cumberland.
With dedication and perseverance, this pilot project was so successful that the return of the volunteers was requested for the following school year. Orientation sessions were held at the North Cumberland Middle School in the Fall, and additional volunteers were recruited. Peggy Gardner, acting this time as โvolunteerโ Director of Volunteers, persisted in her efforts to inform principals and teachers, as well as administration, of the benefits and advantages of having community participation in classroom situations.
Over 50 years later, due to the valiant efforts of Peggy Gardner, the CSV program is still going strong.
Sadly, Margaret โPeggyโ Gardner passed away on Saturday (April 30) at the age of 90. The CSV is just a part of her legacy, but it was always one of her proudest achievements.
She has left an everlasting footprint on the Cumberland schools, and the Cumberland schools are stronger today as a result of her influence all those many years ago.

Do you know itโs National Volunteer Week?
National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognize the impact of volunteer service and the power of volunteers to tackle societyโs greatest challenges, to build stronger communities and be a force that transforms the world. Each year, we shine a light on the people and causes that inspire us to serve, recognizing and thanking volunteers who lend their time, talent and voice to make a difference in their communities.
So today, we want to shine that light on all the parents, grandparents, additional family members, town officials, and teachers that go above and beyond to volunteer in the Cumberland schools, giving the students great experiences in and out of the classroom. The pandemic has definitely caused a decrease in volunteer presence, but we are excited to get back into the schools with you.
The world is better today than it was yesterday, thanks to the efforts of volunteers like you. Your commitment to community is evident in everything you do. We see you, and we appreciate you.
Thank you!
