This is my niece Savitri. It's only over the past couple of years that we have begun to form a connection, and it has been absolutely delightful. There's no doubt that we are family.

🌿Skunk Cabbage is one of the first Spring plants I tend to see (and smell) when traipsing through marshy wooded areas here on Vancouver Island. They are absolutely stunning to look at with their vibrant yellow torch-like appearance. Their leaves mature into large entities which I have seen many a child fashion into some kind of garb or use as shelter material.

Rule of thumb, don't eat them...even if you find the scent pleasant. 🌿

Girls Get Outside, Community Clean-Up

With buckets and tongs in hands, we wandered down the Cumberland alleys collecting garbage. I heard comments like, "We are helping Mother Earth," which made my heart melt. Thank you girls for your help!

Book: Micro Mania (Non-Fiction)
Author: Jordan D. Brown

Audience: Upper Primary and up

This book is awesome. It is funny, gross and engaging. On a quest to learn about the microscopic world and fungi's contribution, I found this keeper at the library. Here is the opening paragraph:

"Try not to panic, but there are billions of tiny creatures crawling all over your skin. They are wriggling on your legs, your arms, your neck, your scalp...EVERYWHERE! And get this - these teeny critters survive by chowing down on the millions of little pieces of dead skin that you shed every day. (Hey! Quit scratching and keep reading.)"

Although this book is not fungus-centric, it is still worth adding to the collection. It is a book that is fascinating and full of squirmy moments. I certainly learned a lot!

Girls Get Outside, Mystery Friend

Over a 4-week period, the girls had a mystery friend (within the group) for whom they could do kind things. This could be done in various ways such as being especially helpful or making something special. On the fourth week, we did the grand reveal which was fun. Some knew who their person was whereas others did not. Many gifts were given as shown in the photos.

Book: Elatsoe
Author: Darcie Little Badger

Audience: Young Adult,
Genre: Speculative Fiction

On a quest to find Indigenous content related to fungi, I fell upon this novel. I admittedly did not finish it but this was not due to a lack of interest, just an absence of time. That said, I still think it is important to share it with you as I think that the relevant subject matter and Indigenous perspective makes for a great young adult read. It takes place in an alternative present-day reality where ghosts, vampires, and other mysterious creatures exist. Fungi even play a role! I suggest reading the description provided in the second and third photo to get a better idea of the storyline.
