Expanding Your Child's Opportunities from PreK thru HS to Learn and Achieve through early childhood programs, the [email protected] and teen leadership, college planning and wellness programs. The Office of Children, Youth and Learning is a Cumberland municipal department created by Former Mayor Daniel McKee, established by ordinance in February 2007. OCYL offers programs for children of all ages. T

We're so excited to be going to start our newest program at the middle schools this week! OCYL's Expressive Arts Club starts right afterschool for those who have already registered (Mondays @ NCMS, Tuesdays @ McCT). Pick up is at 4 PM. We plan to offer it again in January, so if you're on the waiting list, don't worry- you'll get a chance too! Registration for Winter will be announced in November.

For 3 Saturdays students will learn all about the mystical glowing creatures that live deep down at the bottom of the ocean. Students will immerse themselves in the effect of the bioluminescence experience while creating paintings using fluorescent paint under black light.

Early Childhood School Year families: If you need a backpack for your child, stop by this event at BF Norton on Saturday!

Students will learn all aspects of putting on a theatrical production, from crafting the plays to auditioning, acting, directing, stage management, marketing, and finally producing an original performance for an audience. This collaboration inspires confidence and teaches an array of skills, including public speaking and vocabulary building. This class will be taught by Martha Douglas-Osmundson, an award-winning teacher in the arts.

Does your child like to keep on the move and to be outside? Wild Child Literacy, an adult/child experiential learning class is held outdoors rain or shine! Each class includes a guided read-aloud of a children's book led by Mrs. Tiffany Mendez, a literacy and language teacher, with a sensory, play-based activity that reinforces the vocabulary and STEM concepts in the book. Children will see how literacy and the outdoors go, quite literally, hand-in-hand. Each child will make a nature-based craft each week. Parent/guardian is required to attend with their child.

Persuasive writing is all around us - on television, billboards, and even social media! Did you know that there are "secret" techniques people use in persuasive writing that date back thousands of years to the time of ancient Greece? Students will learn about a new speech each week, and produce their very own “TEDtalk” by the end of the session.

Certified Science teacher Mrs. Christine Domen will lead safe -and sometimes messy- activities with common kitchen supplies to allow exploration of many areas of science including gases and solids, chemical reactions, forces, tension, gravity and air pressure.

OCYL: Creating Lifelong Learners
As a municipal education center for children age 0- Grade 12, OCYL offers Early Childhood Programs in Art, Literacy, Math, Music and Science for preschool children; STEAMshop classes and workshops for school age youth and Career/College programs for teens, a summer leadership academy and Youth Commission for teens.
For program details and fees, please see the website. Cumberland children who qualify for free/reduced lunch for the current school year receive 90% financial aid (unless otherwise noted: FA does not cover Private Lessons or materials fees).
