Knowing your scope of practice is part of being an exceptional Newborn Care Specialist. 🍼

As an NCS, your knowledge and experience allow you to observe carefully, educate families, document changes, and recognize when something may need additional attention. But recognizing a concern is not the same as diagnosing it.

A strong NCS knows when to:

👀 Observe what is happening
📝 Document objectively
💬 Communicate clearly with parents
📚 Educate within their training
🤝 Refer to the appropriate healthcare or allied professional when needed

You don’t have to have every answer to be an expert. Sometimes, professionalism means knowing when a question or concern falls outside your scope.

Understanding those boundaries protects the newborn, supports the family, and strengthens the newborn care profession as a whole.

🍼 Managing Baby Eczema: Tips for Soothing a Baby’s Skin 🌿

Eczema in babies can be challenging, but with the right care, you can help soothe your little one’s sensitive skin. Here are some tips to manage and provide relief:

Moisturize Regularly 🧴: Keep your baby's skin hydrated with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. Apply it twice daily, especially after baths, to lock in moisture and reduce itching.

Use Gentle Cleansers 🛁: Choose mild, fragrance-free cleansers for bath time. Avoid harsh soaps and bubble baths that can dry out their skin. Use lukewarm water and keep baths short.

Dress in Soft Fabrics 👕: Opt for soft, breathable cotton fabrics that won’t irritate the skin. Steer clear of wool and synthetic materials that can trap heat and worsen eczema.

Avoid Environmental Triggers 🌬️: Dust, dry air, and pet dander can aggravate eczema. Keep your home clean and consider using a humidifier. Identify and minimize exposure to potential triggers.

📝 How detailed are your daily logs?

Documentation may not be the most exciting part of working as a Newborn Care Specialist, but it can be one of the most valuable.

A well-maintained log gives parents and other caregivers a clear picture of what happened while they were sleeping, working, or away from their baby.

That may include:

🍼 Feedings and amounts when applicable
💤 Sleep and wake times
👶 Wet and dirty diapers
⏰ Medications or supplements when appropriate and authorized
📝 Relevant observations or changes

But good documentation is about more than writing things down.

As an NCS, your notes should be accurate, objective, consistent, and within your scope. There’s an important difference between documenting what you observed and trying to diagnose why it happened.

For example:

“Baby coughed and pulled away from the bottle several times during the feeding.”

is very different from:

“Baby has a swallowing disorder.”

One documents an observation. The other makes a diagnosis.

Strong documentation creates continuity between caregivers, helps parents identify patterns, can provide useful information to healthcare professionals, and demonstrates your professionalism and attention to detail.

And remember: significant concerns should always be communicated directly. A daily log supports communication. It never replaces it.

There’s something pretty special about bringing our 5th conference back to the Omni Montelucia. It still has the beautiful Old World Spanish charm we fell in love with, but it has also undergone a major renovation and transformation since we were last there. We cannot wait for you to see it!

If you’ve joined us before, you already know the NCS Enrichment Conference is about so much more than sitting in a conference room for two days. It’s a weekend of education, connection, networking, community, and a whole lot of fun. And if 2027 will be your first time joining us, we’re so excited for you to experience what makes this weekend so special.

Now, a quick note because we know someone is going to notice… yes, registration pricing has increased a bit this year. Just like many of you have had to adjust your rates as the cost of doing business has gone up, the cost of putting on an event like this has increased as well. 2027 NCS Enrichment Conference registration is opening SOON! 🎉

And for our 5th conference, we’re heading back to where it all began.
