The Virginia State Police crime report has a lot of interesting statistics in it about crime in Virginia.

Those statistics show, amongst a wealth of other things, what we already know - that rifles of any kind are very rarely used to commit violent crimes.

Percentage of murders committed with:
Hands and feet: 3.6%
Rifles: 4.6%
Knives: 5.5%

For aggravated assault (assault using a weapon of some sort):
Rifle: 2%
Motor vehicle: 3.3%
Asphyxiation: 3.9%
Blunt Object: 6.6%
Knife: 11.7%
Hands and feet: 16.6%

Wear your orange Gun Save Lives paraphernalia June 2 to 4th!

Wear Orange Day is something the gun control groups have been pushing for a few years now. I love how they picked the colors used by VCDL for its Guns Save Lives items, which allows us to participate without having to buy any new stuff!

So, you might consider wearing your orange Guns Save Lives hats and/or shirts, or just put on a GSL sticker or pin. This year Wear Orange Day is on June 2, but the gun-control groups are also making it a weekend thing, so consider wearing orange on June 3 and 4, too.

Rifle bullets are statically unstable in flight, because the center of pressure is in front of the center of gravity. To overcome this, the bullet is spun to create gyroscopic stability.

Long skinny bullets require more spin to stabilize than short fat bullets because the center of pressure is further apart from the center of gravity, and because the spinning mass is concentrated close to the axis.
