📣 MEET THE MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC CHOICE SOCIETY

What brings scholars to public choice? What questions shape their research? And what keeps them coming back to the Public Choice Society?

Our new PCS Member Profiles series goes behind the research to introduce you to the scholars who make up our community.

Through candid conversations, PCS members share their academic journeys, the ideas and scholars that influenced them, their current research, and what they value about being part of the Public Choice Society.

Over the coming weeks, we'll highlight some of our members and explore the many paths that lead to public choice.

What is Public Choice?

It’s a question that goes to the heart of our field—and one that Michael Munger, Past President of the Public Choice Society, recently explored in an insightful piece for the Institute for Liberal Studies.

Munger examines the foundational ideas of Public Choice, from the assumption of behavioral symmetry to the importance of incentives, institutions, and rules in shaping political outcomes.

The question was also at the center of a special plenary at the 2026 Public Choice Society Meeting: “What is Public Choice? Roundtable and Book Launch.” The session featured Bruce Bueno de Mesquita, Michael Munger, and Edward Lopez, with John Aldrich serving as organizer and presider.

The Public Choice Society joins the public choice and economics communities in mourning the recent passing of Arthur T. Denzau, a respected scholar whose work advanced the fields of political economy, institutional economics, and public choice.

We extend our condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and students. His scholarship and mentorship leave a lasting legacy.

In recognition of his extraordinary life and lasting legacy, PCS members Mark Crain (PCS President), Ravi Roy, Thomas Willett, and Ryan Yonk will host a special memorial roundtable in Art’s honor at the 2027 Public Choice Society Meetings in March.
