Dulcimer U

Dulcimer U Offering dulcimer workshops at various times throughout the year, both on campus and off campus.

Dulcimer U will continue the long-standing tradition of giving students only the absolute best educational experience available for the mountain dulcimer. Unlike many festivals around the country, Dulcimer U is not about the performers, it’s about you….the student.

If you attended this summer's Dulcimer U camp, you were probably amazed by the poetic talents of Victoria Freeman during the Thursday closing session. I (Elaine) have experienced her talents on numerous occasions, a talent she refers to as merely "summaries." I think you'll agree that her creations are far more than simply a summary! She created this one at my request, and has now shared it with me so that all of you can experience it again!

Poem Dulcimer U 2026

Oh gather round ye fine folks
Hear tales of Dulcimer U.
From July 19–24,2026
There was so much music to do.

Larry, Elaine, and Dr.. Kathy
Created the perfect Master Plan.
And color coded yes it was
To help us understand.

And Dr. Kathy was Uber careful
About possible parking spots
If we stayed between the yellow lines
We’d be towed to distant lots.

Our classes were all under one roof
Taught by carefully chosen folks.
And jams happened each and every night
Lack of stamina was one of the jokes.

And we ate delicious meals each day
There was pizza and other goodies.
And 600 youngsters dined with us
Some in short shorts, some in hoodies.

Intimate concerts went on each eve
Starting with Millers then Susan Trump.
Joe and Carol were stars on Tuesday
Then the Congers made the Bridge jump.

And merchandise tables were laden
Jewelry and books offered delight
And Pat Clark’s hand sewn items
Were such a heart warming sight.

And who can forget ensemble sounds
Or the new friends that we met
Or our lunchroom pop-up
Where Carol and Laurie signaled the set.

At closing we saw the Queen Mum
Receive her perpetual crown.
And we knew from her monologue
Age would not keep her down.

Yes, we’ve told all the good stories
During this time at green Cullowhee .
We’ve honored music with our gift of time.
How very FORTUNATE are we!

During our Mountain Dulcimer Camp last week, this picture memory popped up on my feed! 13 years ago, the great Maddie MacNeil was on our Dulcimer U staff. We were rehearsing a song for the instructor concert at the Bardo Performing Arts Center with myself, Sarah Morgan and Lorinda Jones. If you were there and happen to have a video recording, please email it to [email protected] . I'm sure there are many like me who would love to hear it!

Larry and Elaine would like to thank the participants, instructors, and vendors for making this year’s dulcimer camp one for the record books! We were blessed to have 94-yr-old Lee Felt, aka, “The Bag Lady,” with us all the way from Ohio. She was donned, “The Queen Mother of Dulcimer U,” and received a sash and red rose corsage. She was serenaded with “Give Me Roses While I Live,” sang by Janet Furman and Elaine Conger and backed by Jim Miller on guitar. Her daughter, Joni Wolfinger, played “Lee’s Waltz” on the open sharing circle backed by Laurie Alsobrook and Jeff Furman on dulcimer, with Jeff’s wife Janet on violin. These instructors really made Joni’s night by helping her play her dad’s original composition. She came to DU with the intent to play it for those gathered because her dad never got to hear her play his song of devotion for Lee.
I’m sure there are pics and videos out there. Please email to musicwithcongers@gmail .com so I can post for everyone to experience!
