As our colleagues at UNCG Communication Studies Department say, everyone should major in Communication, Double major in Communication, and Minor in Communication!
Navigating the entry-level job market in the age of AI? Here’s what recent data shows for communication and speech majors. 📢
A new U.S. Census Bureau working paper examining post-graduation outcomes reveals that graduates in the top 10% of AI-exposed majors saw a 5-percentage-point drop in their likelihood of immediate employment (within the first three months) compared to less-affected fields, alongside significant early earnings shocks.
The bright spot? Communication studies remains among the majors most insulated from these immediate disruptions.
Oh, and the others in this image, cropped from a recent Chronicle of Higher Ed article, are also most insulated, AND they all represent communication careers!
While automated tools can process data and draft text, the core human skills central to our discipline—relational strategy, active listening, authentic storytelling, dynamic leadership, and ethical message design—cannot be automated.
As technical roles adapt to growing exposure, human-centered connection and nuanced communication remain vital, future-proof foundations for starting a career. 💡✨
Quick takeaways - all UNCG students should:
Major in CST, Double Major in CST, or Minor in CST
