🔥 Volunteers Needed: Every Tuesday, Starting Next Tuesday! 🔥

Are you looking for a hands-on way to make a difference in our community? Join Project F.I.R.E. (Fuel Intervention for Rural Elderly) and Cullowhee United Methodist Church every Tuesday from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM to help split and stack firewood that will keep Jackson County seniors warm this winter. Plus, it's a great physical activity that gets you outdoors.

Don't let the idea of splitting wood intimidate you! Volunteers use hydraulic splitters that make the work much easier than it sounds, plus support from experienced wood choppers with CUMC and Project Fire! No experience is necessary, and all personal protective equipment and needed supplies are provided.

📍 Location: Cullowhee United Methodist Church, 416 Central Drive, Cullowhee (behind Noble and across from Brown)
👥 Weekly volunteer capacity: Approximately 12 volunteers
✅ Just show up and help!
💪 Recommended attire: Closed-toe shoes or boots and clothes you don't mind getting a little dirty.

Project F.I.R.E. (Fuel Intervention for Rural Elderly) is a program of the Jackson County Department on Aging that cuts, splits, and delivers firewood to low-income seniors who rely on wood as their primary heating or cooking fuel. Through community partnerships and volunteers, the program distributes approximately 200 loads of wood annually throughout Jackson County.

By helping split and deliver firewood, you're helping ensure that rural elderly residents in Jackson County can stay warm throughout the winter. ❤️

✨MEET EMILY✨ AND help us wish her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY because TODAY is her birthday! 🎈

Emily is our new AmeriCorps VISTA member working in the CCESL office! She is a recent Western Carolina alumna, having received her BA in Philosophy. During her time in undergrad, Emily participated in several student-led organizations that encouraged service and dialogue, which consistently helped to contextualize her studies and ground them in real-life applications. Her position at Western aims to create a sustainable food initiative to combat food insecurity on our campus and beyond. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, thrifting, and spending time with her friends.

We're so happy to have students back in town! Now is the chance to start getting involved with organizations like the Center for Domestic Peace, Inc.

Some opportunities to provide support is to sign up as a volunteer victim advocate, a community resource advocate at The Peace Collaborative, or a community ambassador volunteer- non-client-facing.

Are you a current WCU student who wants to have a meaningful Fall Break? Join CCESL on Friday, September 4, 2026, in Belk 273 for an Alternative Fall Break Info Session and learn about this low-cost, high-impact service trip to Jonesville, VA. The trip will run from Sunday, October 11, 2026- Thursday, October 15, 2026! Space is limited for this trip. Come out to the info session so that you can learn more and be prepared to secure your spot.

This week we are spotlighting the American Red Cross, one of our partners in hosting blood drives here on Western's main campus. Be on the lookout for flyers across campus and tablings hosted by our blood coordinator. Every donation makes a difference!
