Join a legacy of EMS leaders at WCU. The Emergency Medical Care Program offers a hands-on, career-focused baccalaureate degree for pre-hospital providers.

The first Baccalaureate Paramedic program in the nation, WCU's EMC Program is one of only a handful of institutions in the nation offering the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Emergency Medical Care. Our exceptional Program and faculty members are available to you here on the Cullowhee campus and at your own location through our online EMC Program. As a WCU EMC student, during completion of your paramedic studies you will concentrate in one of two areas: Health Management or Science. Health Management Concentration: prepares graduates for leadership roles in healthcare, EMS administration positions, and graduate school. Science: prepares graduates for medical school, physician assistant programs, dental school, physical therapy programs, and graduate school. WCU's EMC Program has a rich history of quality instruction in emergency medicine. Our graduates have pursued careers as paramedics, educators, physicians, physician assistants, researchers, and EMS administrators. Whee are proud Wednesday! The EMC program is excited to share that 2026 residential program graduate Leanne Trudel has been accepted and started medical school this fall. She is attending Université de Sherbrooke located in her home country of Canada. Way to go Leanne!

Faculty Friday! We are excited to share the wonderful Dr. Evelyn Wilson with everyone. She is the Clinical Coordinator and pediatric/OB expert. Whee also want to congratulate Dr. Wilson on 15 years at Western Carolina University! She was celebrated at the WCU Years of Service Celebration earlier this week. If you see her around please congratulate her on her years of service to the university and the EMC Program!

Faculty Friday! Meet Ms. Tara Bolmer who is joining us for her first year at WCU. She is teaching the EMT course and two EMT labs this semester. Tara graduated the EMC residential program in 2024 and is currently finishing up her Masters of Health Science degree here at WCU. Whee are so thrilled to have Tara introducing the profession of EMS to the new EMT students!

Welcome back to the second addition of faculty Friday. We are excited to introduce Dr. Jeff Ziomek. Dr. Ziomek serves as the program director in the EMC distance program and has been a certified paramedic for more than two decades. We are so excited to have him and his experience and knowledge of both pre-hospital medicine and health science policy to our distance learners!

Welcome to Faculty Friday! Where whee introduce new and returning faces for the new school year. First up is Mr. Corey Lee who is joining us for his first year in the residential EMC program. His focus for the program is psychomotor skill proficiency and retention. He recently moved from Randolph County and whee could not be more thrilled to have him. Please help us welcome Mr. Corey Lee!

25 years later and we have not forgotten. Thank you to those who gave their lives to help others as well as their families for the loss of those hero’s. And we never forgot those who acted as hero’s that day helping their fellow Americans. Never forget!

Whee hope everyone had a restful Labor Day and were able to enjoy the three day weekend. If you had to work on an ambulance, helicopter, fire truck, law enforcement vehicle, in the hospital, or urgent care, or anywhere else to keep essential services going whee especially want to thank you!
