Athletic Trainers (ATs) are healthcare professionals who provide patient-centered care in collaboration with a physician. As part of the healthcare team, services provided by ATs include injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. ience in Athletic Training (MSAT) program prepares graduate to be professionally engaged while delivering high quality patient-centered care as athletic trainers. The MSAT is a 2-year, 6-semester program that combines didactic education with diverse clinical experiences. Through a comprehensive and innovative experience, the Western Carolina University Athletic Training Program aspires to be a recognized leader in preparing highly skilled and professionally progressive leaders in the field of athletic training. Points of Distinction
-Two immersive clinicals (one for 8 weeks & one for 16 weeks) at clinical sites throughout the United States
-Focused coursework in primary care, spine evaluation and treatment, neuroanatomy, and manual therapy
-Student involvement at the local, state, district, and national levels of the profession
-Opportunities for interprofessional learning and practice
-Overall BOC exam first-time pass rate greater than 95%

Earlier this summer, our 1st year MSAT students practiced the importance of appropriate equipment fitting. Ensuring that equipment such as football helmets and shoulder pads are properly fit help prevent injuries during sports. It is vital that Athletic Trainers remain vigilant and proactive when recognizing the cause of injury, including the simple step of right fitting equipment.

This summer was jam-packed with learning!
Our new First Year MSAT students took ATTR 510 Gross Human Anatomy (including cadaver dissection) with Aleiza and Reece, ATTR 520 Emergency Care in AT with Ashley, and ATTR 524 with Reece. Our Second Year MSAT students started off with a mini immersion rotation in a non-traditional setting then took ATTR 552 Pathophysiology and Pharmacology II with Melissa, ATTR 683 Clinical Education IV with Melissa, and ATTR 660 Neuroanatomy/Spine Assessment and Treatment with Aleiza and Melissa! We will be posting features related to each class over the next week to showcase the hands-on learning our students experienced!
