🪢 Learning the Ropes at CATA! ⚡

Our CATA Utility Line Worker students are building essential hands-on skills! They’ve been learning how to properly tie knots and use ropes for rigging, skills that are important for safely handling equipment and materials in the utility industry.

Today, students put those skills to work by learning how to make a handling sling using a short piece of rope.

Along the way, they’re developing:
🪢 Knot-tying and rope-handling skills
⚙️ Basic rigging techniques
🦺 Safety awareness
📏 Attention to detail
💪 Hands-on problem-solving and job-ready skills

Another great day of learning by doing! ⚡🪢

Another video from today’s 3rd block class. I think they like the hydraulic tamp better than the hand tamp! They definitely like the dirt tarp better than shovels! They got to experience the old way and the new way!

⚡ Learning from the Pros! ⚡

Today, our 3rd Block Utility Line Worker students had an incredible opportunity to work alongside the experienced crew from Cullman Electric Cooperative (CEC)! Students helped pull several of our old climbing poles and replace them with new ones—gaining real-world experience in jobsite safety, teamwork, communication, equipment handling, pole removal and setting, and proper utility work procedures.

Experiences like this are what Career Tech is all about—taking skills learned in the classroom and putting them to work alongside industry professionals.

We are extremely thankful for our partnership with Cullman Electric Cooperative and for their continued investment in the next generation of utility line workers. CEC doesn’t just support our program—they get involved, share their expertise, and give our students opportunities to learn firsthand what it takes to succeed in this industry.

Thank you, CEC, for being an outstanding partner in preparing our students for the workforce! ⚡🦺

Hands-On Learning at CATA!

Today, our CATA Utility Line Worker students put their skills to work learning how to safely build scaffolding! Students practiced proper assembly, leveling, stability, safety procedures, communication, and problem-solving while working together to complete the task.

Building scaffolding takes more than technical skill—it takes teamwork, trust, and attention to detail. These students are gaining valuable hands-on experience and developing the skills needed for success in the workforce! 💪⚡

CATA Utility Line Worker students got a taste of the old-school method of pole climbing—free climbing! 🥾⚡ Of course, we kept safety first by using a safety harness and fall-restraint device. This exercise gave students a whole new appreciation for proper climbing technique, especially the importance of locking their knees and letting their equipment do the work. Nothing like experiencing the “old way” to better understand how far safety and technology have come! 💪⚡ This is Holly Pond High School student Jesse Daniel showing how it’s done.
