Our Sophomore Biomedical Science students have been getting bone-deep into their learning! 🔬 From examining bone structure at the microscopic level to identifying the structural differences and researching the different types of bones in the human body.

Then came the challenge: turning paper into a model of a long bone! 📄➡️🦴 As they constructed their models, students applied what they had learned about the anatomy and structure of bone and identified the parts.

Proof that sometimes the best learning starts with something as simple as a piece of paper! 💙💛

Labor Day Reminder 🇺🇸

Just a reminder, Citrus County Schools will be closed on Monday, September 7, for Labor Day. There will be no school for students, and all district and school offices will be closed.

Our Biomedical Science juniors in Medical Interventions put both quantitative and qualitative data analysis to work during an ELISA investigation using simulated antigens to determine which fictitious patients tested positive for bacterial meningitis.

Students first created a serial dilution to establish known antigen concentrations. They then used those standards to analyze their patient samples in two ways: quantitatively, using their known concentrations to determine the amount of antigen present, and qualitatively, comparing the shade and intensity of blue to interpret their results. 📊💙

The best part? Our juniors got to become the experts! They brought in their AP Biology classmates and showed them the tools, techniques, and data-analysis strategies used in Biomedical Science. It was a great opportunity to connect AP Biology concepts of analyzing and interpreting data with authentic biomedical laboratory work - and to watch students teach students.

Things got a little more muscular in the sophomore Biomedical Science class! 💪

Students built the orbicularis oris, orbicularis oculi, and temporalis muscles onto their Manikens while discussing what each muscle does and the movements it creates. Students also built in some fat tissue and discussed what it does to help protect the structures of the head.

And because every Maniken needs a little personality… students got to choose their eye color! 👀🎨

🔎🧬 Another year, another mystery… and poor Anna Garcia has died again!

Our freshman Biomedical Science students are kicking off Project Lead The Way’s Principles of Biomedical Science with a mock crime investigation designed to put science into action. Students are collecting evidence, analyzing data, developing hypotheses, and using critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to determine what happened.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Grimsley, our newest biomedical scientists are learning that solving a mystery takes more than a good guess—it takes evidence, teamwork, and science! 🧪🔬

It’s been a little while since we’ve shared an update from one of our amazing Academy of Health Careers alumni, and we couldn’t think of a better alum to bring it back than Sarah Monsalve, Class of 2020! 💙💛

Sarah currently works as a Mt. Washington Hut Crew Member and serves in backcountry search and rescue, assisting hikers and responding to emergencies in one of the country’s most challenging mountain environments. 🏔️🩹 She has earned her Wilderness First Aid certification and is working toward her Wilderness First Responder certification!

Sarah, we are incredibly proud of all you’ve accomplished and the unique path you’ve created. We are so proud to call you an Academy alum! 🏴‍☠️💙💛
