I guess ChatGPT didn’t know what I looked like. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ˜‚ Swipe to see the original two caricatures.

I like the Chief Language Enthusiast. I might start using that.

Zero to fuego is all me though! šŸ”„ IYKYK. šŸ˜ It’s been my tagline since day 1ļøāƒ£.

Original Prompt: Create a caricature of me and my job based on everything you know about me.

I had to tell it to make an image because it just provided text first. Then I had to upload my picture because the first two caricatures looked nothing like me. Come on now! Did you try yours yet? Did you have to correct it, too? šŸ˜…

What they DO need šŸ‘‡

The truth is: if your child gets started with grammar lessons that overcomplicate the language…

I’ve seen it again and again — they lose interest fast.

Most kids just don’t find those topics interesting at the very beginning.

When kids are just starting with Spanish, what they really need is a start that feels:
- simple enough to follow
- interesting enough to care about
- and successful enough that they think, ā€œHey, I can do this.ā€

So if your child is just getting started with Spanish, here’s what I recommend instead of diving into grammar right away šŸ‘‡

šŸŽ¶Start with music, chants, and games that captivate them
šŸŖUse bite-sized vocabulary lessons and do practice in between each lesson
ā¤ļøIncorporate their favorite way to practice at the end of each lesson so they have something to look forward to every time they are studying Spanish

When a child feels successful, their desire to keep learning grows naturally
and that’s when they start practicing Spanish independently šŸ™ŒšŸ¼

At Skillabration we take students’ Spanish skills from 0 to fuego! šŸ”„

I have heard loud and clear from my students and moms that apps are no longer cutting it when students want to take their Spanish to the next level.

A lot of our middle school students at Skillabration start off on apps like Duolingo to learn Spanish and it’s great for getting started, but when serious students want to learn more, they crave interaction with a real life teacher.Ā

You want your 12-14-year-old to have the opportunity to practice the language with a teacher so they can get a deeper understanding of the language and learn how to speak Spanish, but you’re wondering if there is a teacher out there who can make learning Spanish fun and relevant to your child.Ā

Here’s the good news šŸ‘‰ your child can get Spanish support in a way that actually makes sense for them and fits into your schedule. We have both 25 minute and 45 minute sessions available, and you can log on right from home for our live Zoom lessons. šŸ¤“

At Skillabration we’ve been teaching Spanish online for 10 years and I’ve seen kids go from complete beginners to confident and speaking just within the first few sessions. How?Ā

We have welcoming, fun educators that make students eager to come back to lessons every week, not just for the Spanish, but to hang out with one of their favorite teachers!

We don’t just work on vocabulary and grammar. We focus on speaking, music, and authentic videos, too. We also love playing games and doing interactive lessons so students get to practice what they learn immediately.Ā

Some of our students have been with us for 4 years now, not because they have to, but because they are getting real results with a teacher they love.Ā

This is where a lot of kids quietly quit. šŸ˜…

Most apps throw kids straight into vocabulary lessons before teaching students pronunciation.Ā

What happens?
🄓Students never learn how to pronounce Spanish correctly even though it’s a phonetic language.
🫩Students therefore lack confidence when reading and speaking, to the point that they avoid participation when they eventually do join a live class.
😩Then they dread going to Spanish class, when it’s supposed to be something fun and exploratory
šŸ™…šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ™…šŸ»The next thing you know, they’re dropping out of Spanish

The problem has nothing to do with your child’s intelligence or skills. The problem is that apps and even many Spanish teachers skip teaching phonics.Ā

Here’s what to do instead šŸ‘‡
In our online Spanish lessons for middle schoolers, we start with Spanish phonics right from the get-go.Ā Ā
šŸŽ¶First we learn the alphabet with a catchy song
šŸ—£ļøThen we practice letter recognition and play games that eventually lead to students producing the letters
šŸ™‹šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøWe also use chants to learn Spanish phonics and weave phonics and letter recognition in throughout level 1 without students thinking twice about it (we make it fun)!

The result?
šŸŽ‰ They get a quick win in the first week of class
šŸŽ‰ They feel proud and excited to show you what they learned
šŸŽ‰ They actually want to come back and do it again tomorrow

If you’ve got a 12-14-year-old who is begging to learn Spanish and you’re nervous they’ll lose interest quickly… they don’t need more discipline.

They need an easier first step that still feels real and fun.

That’s exactly how we start kids in our Spanish group or 1:1 lessons online from day one your child will build confidence that brings them back and eager to learn after every lesson. No more app lessons that skip over one of the most crucial steps in language learning.

Hi, I’m Nikki! I’m a former public school teacher turned founder of Skillabration where we take students’ foreign language skills from 0 to fuego. šŸ”„

We offer Spanish, ASL, French, Mandarin and Cantonese lessons to learners ages 8 and up, but the majority of our students are middle schoolers.

Parents have told us that their children love lessons with our teachers because they’re patient, warm, engaging, and excited to come back for more (see some of our testimonials in our pinned post).

As a team of 7-10 teachers we have helped over 2,000 learners build fluency, confidence, and excitement while learning languages.

What I care about most as the founder is helping kids feel inspired to learn in our classes so they can walk out with a tangible skill they can apply to life, even if it is just having the confidence to greet someone in a new language.

I’ve heard stories from children who have felt overwhelmed or discouraged after their language lessons, which is why it is of utmost importance to me that our teachers at Skillabration meet learners where they’re at. Whether they’re timid about speaking or dream about becoming fluent, we know how to provide our learners with an excellent lesson!

In our online classroom (typically on Zoom), we focus on:
• Making lessons engaging and fun so learners look forward to each and every lesson
• Ensuring students comprehend what they’re learning before they participate, so they’re confident when it’s their turn to practice using the language
•Catering to students’ needs and learning styles throughout our lessons

Our team of teachers are experts in their field who make language learning a wonderful experience for each child.

If you’re reading this and thinking, ā€œI’d love this for my child,ā€ comment ā€œFUEGOā€ below and I’ll send you a message so we can chat more about how one of our teachers can support your family. šŸ”„
