This 1907 photograph captures an Ojibwe gathering near Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, during a pause in dancing for a giveaway ceremony. What might appear to an outsider as a simple exchange carries much deeper meaning within many Native communities, where giving can express generosity, gratitude, honor, and responsibility to others.

Historical photographs become far more meaningful when the people pictured are understood as participants in living cultures rather than anonymous subjects from the past. Gatherings, songs, dances, and acts of generosity helped carry community relationships forward from one generation to another.
