This week we jumped into our curriculum! Students are living our normal schedule in order to get used to the expectations, which will help them plan their weeks and keep them on track. Our graded assignments and learning time is Monday through Wednesday, Thursday is a finishing/catch-up/get help day, and Friday is their quiz for the week. All work for the week is due on Friday by 4 pm, including Delta Math (which students are assigned on Sunday). Students will email parents their school assignments next Monday, and will let you know if they are missing anything this week! All of this week's assignments will close on Friday, Sept. 1.

This week, we have been learning about classroom procedures, expectations, thinking skills, and how the brain learns. This is an important time of the year as it is a time we use to create bonds, develop classroom culture, and set high expectations. What we put in the DNA of our students now will carry us throughout the year. It's been a good start of the year! The kids are amazing!

We are learning about logic this week, which is the underlying thinking skill to our 7th grade math. “Using what we know to help us figure out what we don’t know.” Students are learning how to eliminate unnecessary information to help them find the answers with nonograms. I think they’re addicted.

Hello everyone!

Our first week of school was about classroom procedures, getting to know kids, etc. This past week was the beginning of 6th-grade review, setting the daily pace, and creating class culture. We want students to be willing and ready to take risks in their learning in order to fill in gaps, and they need a safe environment to do so. We set our social contract, learned how to record our work in our composition notebooks (we're still working on that), and reviewed adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals.

Next week we will start taking grades: we have a quiz on operations with decimals and one with operations with fractions. We will do a notebook check for completion, and homework will begin as well. Homework will be assigned in Delta Math, and students will have from Monday - Saturday to complete it since many of our students have busy after-school schedules throughout the week. The homework will give students needed practice in these skills. They are not allowed to use calculators or google answers!

Woah! I haven't updated in awhile! To now we have completed our financial literacy unit and also our data and statistics unit. A lot of new learning is going on! The week of May (CAN YOU BELIEVE IT'S MAY??) 3-7 is review week. We will be going over everything we have learned throughout the year. The thing about STAAR is that it is a comprehensive test over everything taught through the year. So we want to make sure the students have it all fresh in their minds. We talked about that this week, and the students reviewed some geometry concepts and were surprised with how quickly they forgot them! They told me they are so glad we are reviewing!

STAAR is May 11th. I'll post some tips about the things students should bring as well as the type of breakfast that will be beneficial for them. (Hint: no heavy carbs!)

We have finished our unit on equations and inequalities. It's something new that most students have little experience with, which is to be expected. Many students talk about using their intuition, or "gut", when working these problems. While this may have served them in the past, it is not serving them well with this new learning. The reason is that intuition is based on experiences. It is our brain recognizing patterns without us even realizing it. But what happens when we are learning something new? Our experiences are few, and so our intuition is weak. Instead, students need to rely on logic and the rules of the new learning in order to build the intuition they need.

That said, we are continuing our new learning by learning about the coordinate plane, placing coordinate pairs on the plane. These pairs will be fractions as well. Later, we will learn how to take information from tables and equations, and we will also learn how to tell whether these tables and graphs are additive or multiplicative. It will be a lot during the next two weeks, but it will be done a little at a time.

Lots of learning in the next couple of weeks!

We have been learning all about expressions, and how they can be combined, manipulated, and changed around using different properties, then figuring out if they are equal. Students get frustrated with expressions because they reeeeeally want to solve them. This week, we will let them do that by giving them the value of the variable and let them work it out. This will get more complex because we will bring in fractions and decimals as well.

We also have been focusing on doing one thing at a time and really managing our focus. It is so easy to put our attention in other places that are so accessible: another tab, a cell phone, etc. But when we're learning, it's important to give our time and attention to the thing we're learning. Students have been so receptive to this! It makes me wonder if they need that focus time!

Next week is our test over expressions, equations, and the different properties we've been working on. We will review on Monday before our test on Tuesday.

This week we are finishing up Unit 5 by learning about scale factor. Then we'll review all we've learned about different types of proportions (metric and customary conversions, using ratio tables and graphs, and how equivalent ratios are proportions) before we test on Thursday. Friday we will retest if needed, but to tell you the truth, the kids are learning how to work hard, concentrate, and use the tools they have been given in order to solve problems. It is SO fun to see! They are growing in their confidence! This first semester is almost over!! I am giving them a preview of the second semester through a program called Delta Math. They have the opportunity to gain some experience with the new math they will be learning, and this will give them the opportunity to absorb and think about the content before we jump into it! Two more weeks before break!!

"I can do it in my head. Why do I need to show my work?" This is a common misconception students come to middle school with, because it doesn't take into consideration that the things we are learning in math not only help us compute, they help us communicate. Math is a form of communication, and it is fairly precise for the most part. When we use the right vocabulary, the right structures, the right formulas in order to communicate what we are thinking, it sends the right form of communication to the person reading it as well. Students are learning to organize the data given in word problems into ratio tables. As I walk the room, I can see the ones who get that form of communication, and those who do not. As I tell my students, middle school is a time when they are exposed to more sophisticated math. If we stick to the old ways of doing things, we are setting ourselves up for more difficult days ahead! Encourage your child to use the correct form. Right now we are not just looking for right answers. We're also looking for correct communication of those answers!

Hello everyone! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and you were able to relax and recharge!

This week we are going to be learning about constant speed, unit pricing, and proportions. Since these are extensions of things we have already learned, we will be able to think more and talk about the things we are applying. We will practice these concepts on Monday - Wednesday, with Thursday being review, and Friday intervention and extension.

No tests this week, but lots of reinforcement!

This week we will be looking at customary and metric conversion, and relating them to proportions eventually. THIS is why ratios and the understanding of them is so important. These skills are important in social studies and science as well, as students learn how to think about sizes and relationships of sizes. Since there is a lot of baking in the next six weeks with the upcoming holidays, it would be good to allow your child to help you measure, and let them see the metric and customary measurements on the measuring cups. Students have been comparing ratios so they can visualize larger and smaller amounts with questions using unit fractions such as "Which is bigger, 1/3 or 1/4?" and then moving to ratios that are closer such as 5/6 vs. 6/7. Students should be able to describe to you how to solve these problems (hint: they should divide!)

We will be working to fill in gaps from earlier concepts from this year, and students will test on the first part of Unit 5. These are district assessments, and they let us know how much students gained in their math growth during this unit.

Remember students build on prior knowledge, so any real-world examples you can give students on comparing prices, finding out how much something costs for one is something you can do while shopping, looking through ads, etc. It can only help!
