We had a great summer, but we lost a couple of our treasured and loved boys that did not get a post.

We lost Brevity just as the summer was getting started. He caught pneumonia after choking. The vet was able to clear the choke and he was put on antibiotics from the start, but as he developed pneumonia we switched antibiotics, but his body did not respond. He was compromised with cushings. Brev was 30 years old and had spent half of his life with us after coming from a friend in NY. He was a teacher. He started his life at residential school for kids who were struggling. Then he had his own person for some years before she gave him to the ranch. He was a teacher. He mostly did as he was asked, but he had feelings about how one should ask. When he was offended he would kick out and unbalance his rider. They got the feeling of being knocked around without being in much danger of falling off. He helped built confidence in his young riders. He worked in all the riding groups. As an older gentleman he would get a little bounce in his step and a twinkle in his eye when he got to do a day (or even half a day) with the big kids.

At the end of the summer we lost Luke. Luke had been on loan to us for years from a friend in NY. Luke had EPM for the second time. We treated him and early on it looked like he was going to have a miraculous recovery, but pretty quickly he started regressing. He lacked balance and was unable to walk a straight line. He had good days and bad days as far as his coordination. He had a good summer living in the inside stalls and hanging hi head out to collect all the love attention of the kids as they went by. Luke was loved and spoiled every where he went. He went home every off season while he was at camp. He worked in all of our groups and was always good. Bambi, thank you so much for sharing him with us. Thank you also for helping to make the right decision for Luke to let him go on a good day surrounded by love.

We also lost Doc in the middle of the summer. He did get his own post. This is the loss of three of our older guys who were trusted with our beginning riders. They leave a large hole in our program that will leave us searching for horses to try and fill their foot prints.

On a non horse note we also lost Swag an almost 14 year old Australian Cattle Dog thought he ran the farm. He was loved by more people than those that were allowed to pet him. He had a big personality with a lot of opinions that he shared with all of us. Staff felt like they had truly made it when they showed up for orientation and Swag suddenly decided they were on his team now. Most of his years he loved to steal the hat off your head when you were bent over working. He also stole and ran off with many a director's shoe. He was A LOT, which leaves a lot too miss.
