Karate tournament from the 80's 10/12/2023

The title says 80s and I believe a few clips are from the late 80s. A majority of this video comes from the 93 Sabaki Challenge in Denver Colorado. I’ve long held that the Sabaki Challenge is the “perfect” karate tournament. You can see people from nearly every style there. Enshin, Ashihara, Kyokushin, Shidokan, tkd, tang soo do, kenpo, and the Okinawan karate styles too peppered in there. The rules were perfect for showcasing technical skill. It allowed clinches, throws, leg kicks. The aim was to down your opponent or force them to submit. No gloves meant punches to the face would end in a broken hand so you had to be smart about where you landed your shots. This is what karate was for many people, and I believe it’s what karate can be again, we have to go back. Multi discipline tournaments that allow karateka and martial artists from all walks to showcase skill and techniques. OSU!

This month we celebrate the 100th year anniversary of Sosai Mas Oyama’s birth, the legendary founder of tremendous martial artist of legendary super human strength.

Once upon a time .. when he was just a kid, Mas Oyama decided to travel to Minobu mountain and live in solitude to dedicate his time completely to training body and mind. Training twelve hours a day with no rest days. Standing below ice-cold waterfalls, breaking river stones, using trees as his makiwara. A training menu like this surpasses physical standards, digging deep into mental and spiritual powers to maintain such a regimen. dedicating to getting that final rep or holding that contraction for just one more second, to build on mental powers each time. He became more energetic and lively. When he returned back to society he was a completely different man. Mentally, Physically and Spiritually. He was only 23 years old.
