🏆 Mitch Swaggert | 2026 Crosslake Community School Staff Member of the Year

How do you create a sense of community when your students live all across Minnesota?

For Mitch Swaggert, you create opportunities to bring them together.
During his six years at Crosslake Community School, Mitch has become what his nomination calls a “transformative force” for the school's online learners. As Engagement Lead, he works to bridge the distance between students and turn a virtual student body into a genuinely connected community.

One example came this spring with the Global Connections Meetup. Mitch brought students from across Minnesota to Crosslake and incorporated four international student volunteers into the experience. Together, students, staff and parent volunteers visited local destinations including the Crosslake Historic Log Village and National Loon Center while participating in activities designed to encourage conversation and cultural exchange.

The very next day, Mitch was back at it for another milestone: CCS's first-ever in-person high school prom. When local wildfire conditions required the school to suddenly adjust plans, Mitch remained a steady presence, focused on keeping students safe, connected and reassured so they could enjoy their night.

Those are big moments, but his nomination says what truly sets Mitch apart happens every day:

“His actions are driven by a genuine desire to make every individual feel seen and valued.”

Mitch is a bridge-builder and relationship-builder who makes sure distance doesn't stand in the way of belonging. His impact reaches beyond students to families, coworkers and the Crosslake community.

CCS is helping connect students and community members with Operation Sandwich, a program of Bridges of Hope that provides food support during school breaks and other times when school meals are not available. For the upcoming MEA Break, Operation Sandwich is offering lunch packs that include items such as peanut butter, jelly, bread, fresh produce, snacks and canned goods. Pick-up locations will be available in Brainerd, Crosslake, Nisswa and Pine River. Registration is required and must be completed by Monday, October 5.

📸 Reminder! Picture retakes are this Friday (Oct 2), from 8:30-11am at CCS!

Students who missed picture day or would like a retake are welcome to participate.

In person students will receive instructions from their teachers. Online students are welcome to stop by anytime between 8:30 and 11am. No appointment or pre-registration is needed. Please head to the main office upon arrival.

Students who already had their photos taken and are getting retakes should bring their original photo packet to return.
