Day 3 fly demonstration update

Crosby County Extension and Garza County Extension are teaming up on a fly control result demonstration to help livestock owners make more informed decisions about fly management options.

A result demonstration is a hands-on Extension project where we test a product, practice, or management method under real-life conditions and document the results. The goal is not just to see what works in theory, but to evaluate how it performs in an actual barn or livestock setting.
For this project, each county will be evaluating the same fly control products in small barn settings.

We will be comparing several commercially available fly traps side-by-side to see how they perform when flies have access to each option under similar conditions. The traps will be rotated during the demonstration to help reduce placement bias.

We will also be monitoring a fly bait aerosol treatment separately over a 30-day period to observe how it performs on a treated surface.

Throughout the demonstration, we will be tracking:
Fly catch or visible fly kill
Ease of setup
Cost
Odor
Messiness
Maintenance needs
Practicality for livestock owners
Placement concerns
Dust or residue buildup
Overall ease of use in a real barn setting

Fly control can be frustrating, and there are a lot of products available. Some may catch more flies, some may be easier to use, and some may be more practical than others depending on the location.

This demonstration is designed to provide real-life observations that can help producers and livestock owners choose products that best fit their needs.

Fly traps and bait products are only one part of a good fly management program. Sanitation, manure management, reducing wet organic matter, and proper product placement are still important pieces of effective fly control.

We look forward to sharing updates and final results as we monitor these products over the next several weeks.
