Quick heads up, Facebook doesn’t always show business page posts to everyone anymore, so I don’t spend a ton of time posting here. Most of what I’m sharing these days goes on my personal page where I can be more active and put out better content that actually reaches people.

Colorado Winter Field Training is now on the calendar for March 19–22, 2026.
Late March at elevation is still winter. Snow in the trees. Cold mornings. Long shadows. It’s a good time to slow things down and actually learn what cold weather does to decision making, movement, fire, shelter, and water.
This is an intermediate level course, but winter doesn’t really care what level you are. Simple tasks take longer. Small mistakes matter more. That’s the point.
If you’ve been wanting to experience winter on its terms and build real field confidence instead of just talking about it, this course is for you.
Details and registration are live. Link in comments
Hope to see some familiar faces out there and some new ones!

Every group brings its own energy to the mountains and this crew showed up ready to learn, push themselves, and support each other. Moments like this remind me why I love teaching real human skills out here in the Colorado wilderness. Thanks for making it a weekend to remember.

Boiling water over a small fire looks simple from the outside, but anyone who has tried it knows how much attention it takes. Keeping the flame steady, managing the coals, and holding your container at the right height takes practice. This is why we spend time on the small things out here. They are not small when you need them.

What outdoor skill surprised you by being harder than it looked?

Stryker the Survival Dog in his younger days. Half guardian, half goofball, and always chewing on something he probably should not be chewing on. He has watched more classes than most humans and has better trail instincts than anyone I know.

Anyone else have a dog that thinks they are part of the training team?

Not every moment out here is smiles and or what feels like achievement. Real wilderness time has a way of stripping you down and reminding you that you are not as big as you think you are. Sometimes people hit a wall. Sometimes they get quiet. Sometimes they sit down, breathe, and feel everything they have been avoiding. The mountains do that to you.

This is part of the training too. Learning your limits, meeting yourself honestly, and finding out what you still need to work on. It is not pretty, but it is real, and everyone who has spent time in the woods has had a moment like this.

What has the wilderness taught you about yourself?

Sometimes being an instructor means carrying a little extra. And sometimes “a little extra” turns into two full packs and whatever else people hand you on the trail. You just keep moving and laugh about it later.

What is the heaviest pack you have ever carried on a hike?

Sometimes the best part of a hard day in the mountains is taking a minute to sit in the shade and laugh with good people. These classes bring together all kinds of backgrounds, ages, and stories, and somehow by day two it always feels like a small tribe. It is one of my favorite parts of teaching.

Who is your favorite person to get outside with?

Moving through terrain is where you really learn how your gear works, how your footing feels, and how fast conditions can change. These small moments matter just as much as the big “skills.” Every step teaches you something if you pay attention.

What is the toughest terrain you have had to cross on a hike?

A lightweight IFAK put together by our medic. Nothing fancy. Nothing you do not need. It all fits in a simple sandwich bag and covers the problems you are most likely to run into out on the trail. A kit is only useful if you know how to use what is inside it.

What do you keep in your med kit, and do you actually know how to use every piece of it?
