Martin Luther King Jr. & Freemasonry — A Matter of Truth and Respect
MLK Day 2026

Martin Luther King Jr. was not a Freemason — and that truth matters just as much as the connection he carried.

Dr. King came from deep Masonic roots. His father, Martin Luther King Sr., and his grandfather were both Freemasons, firmly within the Prince Hall Freemasonry in Atlanta. Masonic halls were familiar spaces to him — places of order, discipline, fellowship, and moral discussion.

Though he never formally joined the Craft, Dr. King was often welcomed in Masonic lodges. Why?
Because the principles he preached were the same ones Masons are charged to live by:

Brotherhood over division

Equality over privilege

Justice tempered with mercy

Human dignity above all else

Historical accounts suggest that arrangements were being made for Dr. King to become a Freemason shortly before his assassination in 1968. History intervened. The initiation never happened.

But here’s the important part — membership was never the point.

Dr. King lived the ideals many Masons work a lifetime to apply. He practiced them publicly, under pressure, at great personal cost. Whether inside the lodge or standing in the streets, his labor was moral labor — the hardest kind.

On this MLK Day, we honour the man as he was.
No embellishment. No false claims. Just truth, respect, and recognition.

but every great builder leaves a mark.

History has been made as President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., became a Master Mason with full honors, joining the esteemed brotherhood of Prince Hall Freemasonry. The private ceremony, held by the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of South Carolina, was led by the 27th Most Worshipful Grand Master, Victor C. What a joyous time in the Lord. The Bible tells us in Psalm 133:1, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity!”
‭‭We celebrate this day the Holy St John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist and are said to be the Patron Saints of Freemasonry. Combined they are known as “The Holy Saints John”. Scholars claim that the custom came from the practice of new Masons taking their obligations on a Bible opened to the first chapter of the Gospel of John. It also takes place after new offers have taken their new offices.

And dwell is what we did!

Bonus question: what holidays do Freemasons celebrate?

Thanks to the brothers from Randolph Lodge for pictures.

While this has been a very different school year for me, in my 8 years. Due to our students are changing right in front of our eyes, and parents one day show no reaction to you meeting with them, then two days later they have stepped up to the plate and made a positive difference in their child life! This is still the best job ever and the most rewarding and most satisfying thing you could have ever imagine. And when others come to you and show you or reward you or share with you what a student thinks of you there is so much joy. Just this week one of my former students had to stop by and tell me her good news in person the joy of knowing that like five years later, I am still a special person that she wanted to share her future and the joys of her life. Then just two or three days ago, a teacher sends me an email And she explains the assignment she gave to her students and this one student is also one of my second year students. The question that she asked in this assignment was who is someone that you look up to;, it being a parent, a neighbor, a teacher or a friend? And the student said,”Mr G… that I am that person!

So today I wanted to stop and share one of the highlights of the school year. Each job has pros and cons, but this is something that makes getting up every morning worth it. To have your daughter Brooke Gallion who was chosen as, “teacher of the year” for her school, to text you and say , “dad why didn’t you tell me about this ?”what an honor it is to represent my school district.
