Acute "Stress" in Dogs and Cats

When dogs and cats encounter an acute ‘stressor’ – and event, experience, or stimulus that is scary or profoundly uncertain to them, they experience what is colloquially called ‘stress’. We have become so accustomed to the idea that everyone can be ‘stressed’ that we fail to realize that ‘stress’ and ‘being stressed’ is not one thing. Responses to stressors – loud or unfamiliar noises, vet visits, meeting unfamiliar dogs and cats, car travel – involve a range of physiological and behavioral responses, some of which hard-wired survival mechanisms, and some of which vary from individual to individual. Furthermore, any one dog’s or cat’s ‘response surface’ – the way an individual will respond depending on early maternal and epigenetic effects, genes, and previous experiences – will shape their response. This interplay between individual variation and adaptive responses gone wrong suggests a wide array of interventions. We’ll discuss the physiology, behavior and possible pathology involved in acute ‘stress’ responses in dogs and cats.
Our Speaker
Karen OverallKaren L. Overall, MA, VMD, PhD, DACVB received her BA, MA and VMD degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She did her residency training in veterinary behavioural medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviourists (DACVB). Dr. Overall is a Professor of Behavioural Medicine at Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI where she created the clinical, didactic and research program which trains veterinary students, residents, and graduate students.
