Third grade has gone full paleontologist! Students are investigating how fossils can help us piece together what an area looked like long ago by carefully excavating “fossils,” creating detailed scientific illustrations, and making their own fossil casts. Turns out, digging up the past is a pretty hands-on business! This week’s fossil evidence? Our young paleontologists are making casts just like the real deal.

We are resetting part of our school garden this year, so during our first Sustainable Development and Stewardship garden session, students planted green bean seeds in underutilized garden beds around the school in small groups. The students chose garden beds that get enough sunlight. We can't wait to see if our seeds will grow!

Lower school students enjoyed an amazing visit from the Creve Coeur Fire Department in connection with Fire Safety Week! Students had the opportunity to meet local firefighters, explore a fire truck, and learn important fire safety tips. It was a fun and educational experience that helped our students better understand how to stay safe and appreciate the important work our firefighters do in our community!

We had an incredible visit from ocean scientist and author Juli Berwald and violinist and composer Chad Cannon! Juli Berwald shared with us about about Tela Coral, the nonprofit organization dedicated to coral reef conservation.Through their inspiring show, Music for the Ocean, we explored the wonders of the underwater world through music, animation, and beautiful sound and light design. Each piece introduced us to a different marine animal or ocean topic, making us feel like we were traveling beneath the sea! It was a fun and memorable way to learn more about our oceans and the importance of protecting them. l

Our first and second graders read the book Not a Box by Antoinette Portis and discovered that imagination can turn an ordinary box into almost anything! Together, students collaborated, brainstormed ideas, and practiced creative thinking as they imagined what a box could become. Students then put their writing skills to work by creating their own descriptions, practicing the key features of a complete sentence—including a clear subject and predicate, correct capitalization, and punctuation. We love seeing our young writers turn big ideas into words!

Our 3rd and 4th graders are trading ordinary words like small and sad for “juicier” words that make their writing more descriptive and engaging! As students thought of a stronger word, they wrote it on a Post-it Note and added it to the board. Before long, the whole board was covered with amazing vocabulary! Students then chose their favorite words to add to their writing notebooks to use throughout the year.
