CRETE-MONEE SCHOOL DISTRICT 201-U & CRETE POLICE DEPARTMENT
Monday evening, the Crete Police Department was notified of a threat against the high school that had been posted on a social media site about a high school football game. This threat involved a statement between several anonymous individuals with one making a statement of “Putting my AR to work…Tuesday morning.” Readers of the post were disturbed and several parents commented on the post stating that they were deciding to keep their children out of school to avoid any potential danger.
Due to the nature of the post, the on-duty police sergeant immediately contacted the high school administration and Chief of Police to alert them of the incident and an investigation was started. The police department and the school district takes these types of threats seriously and works diligently to address school safety concerns.
Due to the media used for the threat, these can be difficult to investigate and take time to fully investigate. Nevertheless, officers, detectives, and the school resource officer worked tirelessly overnight to gather information and track down the perpetrator.
The police department updated administration with the results of the investigation and out of an abundance of caution, collaboratively developed a school safety plan for Tuesday. This included a police presence and school safety protocol.
This morning, officers located the offender at the student’s residence, where they were identified as a Crete-Monee High School Student (juvenile). Officers arrested the juvenile for felony disorderly conduct. A search of the juvenile’s room found no fi****ms or immediate access to them.
At this time, all information received indicates this was only a verbal threat. However, the police department considers even verbal threats of this nature extremely dangerous, disruptive, and disturbing to students, school staff, residents, and specifically to parents who have children in the school district.
We are grateful that the school district and police department have built a solid, close relationship which enables us to communicate quickly and clearly to address school safety issues.
