A look at the finished sculptures from the first Three-Dimensional Design assignment!

For this project, students explored geometric abstract sculpture, using shape, form, repetition, balance, movement, color, and space to create a three-dimensional composition.

Students worked with a minimum of 30 geometric shapes and considered how their sculptures would be viewed in the round, creating compositions that change as the viewer moves around them.

A great start to the semester and an introduction to thinking, designing, and creating in three dimensions!

🌟Student Spotlight🌟
Over the summer, many of our Art & Design students take advantage of internship opportunities to gain new experiences and grow their skills. This recent summer graphic design junior, Hailey Schweitzer, found herself as a Brand Design Intern at Hudl in Lincoln, NE.

“I’ve really been enjoying the experience with brand design at Hudl. I’ve learned new design skills such as how to design for a company within their brand guidelines while still pushing the creativity. This internship has helped build my confidence, improve my professional communication, and has prepared me for a future career in the design field after graduation,” said Hailey.

We congratulate Hailey on this great achievement and can’t wait to see where this opportunity takes her!

As our first practice with gouache, our color theory course worked on postcards to enter into the Winsor & Newton Art Mail Global Gallery! 🎨 Their postcards are off to London to join thousands of other artists. After the exhibition, the artwork will be auctioned off to raise funds for Hospital Rooms, a charity bringing art into mental health inpatient units and rooms!

💥💥💥A look at artwork from our Drawing 2 final from last semester! Students explored mixed media, concept, and color. 💥💥💥

For this project, students experimented with pastel and colored pencil to create expressive, layered pieces inspired by their own interests and perspectives.

From culture, beliefs, storytelling, activism, identity, and personal passions, each artwork tells its own unique story.

🌿 FROM THE DIRT 🌿

From the Dirt is a solo exhibition by Jared Jennings. Jared’s art is deeply inspired by family, labor, and a lifelong connection to the land.

Growing up in Neosho, Missouri, Jared was surrounded by the hills of the Ozarks and by a family history closely tied to the land. His grandparents took care of a small farm, and generations of his family lived and worked in the area. That connection to the land and the work ethic passed down through his family continue to shape his approach to art making.

Working with found objects and materials, Jared transforms the ordinary into something unexpected, reflecting the places, people, and experiences that have shaped him.

This exhibition will open on August 24 in the Rall Gallery! Don’t forget to join us for the Closing Reception on September 24 from 4:30-6:00 PM.

This year the art and graphic design students entered into MindExpo! MindExpo is a university-wide event to celebrate our students’ original scholarly works completed in the current academic year. The event gives students an opportunity to discuss or showcase their work in and out of the classroom before the entire university community.

We are so excited to continue showcasing our students work at MindExpo in the future!🎨💻🧪

Don’t forget to stop by the Rall Gallery tonight from 5:30–7 PM to celebrate Jose and all he’s accomplished at the closing reception for his exhibition, Letting Go.

Working primarily in ceramics, Jose’s body of work reflects a deeply personal journey shaped by childhood creativity, resilience, and independence. Growing up with limited resources, he turned to drawing and sculpting to build imagined worlds, forming an early and lasting connection to art. Through sculpture, the human figure becomes a vehicle for exploring the shift from outward curiosity to inward introspection. His recent works especially emphasize acceptance, endurance, and the strength found in self-support and reflection.

You can read a more in-depth summary of Jose’s work in the last picture, which contains his exhibition statement.
