Today CAPAA visual art students took part in the firing of their pottery pieces using the Raku method. The process known as Raku was created in 16th Century Japan to help satisfy a rising demand for tea bowls for the sacred Japanese Tea Ceremony, it involves removing the pottery from the kiln when it reaches 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. The red-hot pot is immediately placed into a sealed container containing dried leaves, straw or wood chips, these naturally burst into flames as and burn as the hot pot comes into contact with them. This burning releases carbon which embeds itself into the clay body and glaze, which is still a liquid glass at that point. The result is that the glazes and clay are altered by the carbon, producing some very striking results.
