The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborh

ood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. The CERT concept was developed and implemented by the City of Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) in 1985. They recognized that citizens would very likely be on their own during the early stages of a catastrophic disaster. Accordingly, LAFD decided that some basic training in disaster survival and rescue skills would improve the ability of citizens to survive and to safely help others until responders or other assistance could arrive. The training model that the LAFD initiated was adopted by other fire departments around the country, including communities where the major threat is hurricanes rather than earthquakes. Building on this development, in 1994 the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) expanded the CERT materials to make them applicable to all hazards and made the program available to communities nationwide. Since that time, thousands of dedicated trainers, organizations, and citizens have embraced the responsibility to learn new skills and become prepared to execute safe and effective emergency response. Get ready to learn lifesaving skills and become a neighborhood hero with this hands-on emergency prep course.
Learn how to support yourself and your community before, during, and after a disaster. Get involved with your Santa Rosa County CERT!

Students must attend all 4 sessions to complete their training and be qualified to volunteer in Santa Rosa County. The course is free and all students will receive a basic CERT supplies kit for free as well.

Prerequisite course - Students should complete the IS-317 online course before attending. The course is brief and can be completed from the comfort of your home.

These teams play a vital role in helping our community during times of disaster and emergencies, as well as providing support for community events like parades, festivals, and 5Ks. This is a great opportunity for families to volunteer together as young people ages 12 and older can participate with a parent or guardian.

FEMA Announces 2026 National Preparedness Month Theme - Americans Stand Ready.

FEMA encourages individuals and communities to mark September as a time to learn how to keep their families safe before, during and after disasters.

Today, FEMA’s Ready Campaign is announcing the 2026 National Preparedness Month theme—Americans Stand Ready. The campaign has observed National Preparedness Month since 2004 to encourage Americans to prepare for emergencies. The month is a great time to take small steps to make a big difference in being prepared.

This year’s theme connects to FEMA broader approach to disaster response. Just as FEMA empowers state and local governments to lead their own response and recovery efforts when disaster strikes, FEMA’s Ready Campaign empowers individuals to take charge of their own readiness. When Americans take steps to prepare for disasters and keep their families safe, every neighborhood and community is more resilient. Throughout National Preparedness Month in September, FEMA will celebrate and encourage American resourcefulness and civic responsibility.

This year’s theme will focus on several distinct ideas that capture how Americans take pride in their ability to protect themselves and their families and work together to recover from disasters:

Americans stand ready to uphold our patriotic duty: When individuals are prepared and self-reliant, we can bolster the work our brave first responders do to help people on their worst day.
Americans stand ready to protect our family and friends: We know best how to keep our loved ones safe when things go wrong.
Americans stand ready to help our communities: Taking a proactive approach to get your community ready contributes to the nation’s resilience.
Throughout the month of September, the Ready Campaign will share easy, affordable steps to take to stand ready, no matter what comes. Tips include:

Be in the know. Make sure you know where to get information when you need it most. Download the FEMA App to get emergency safety alerts and resources.
Make a plan to keep you and your family safe and prepared. The plan should include emergency contact information, emergency meeting places and medical information.
Build a kit with the essential items your family needs to stay safe and comfortable if something happens.
