It’s hard to believe, but we met up with another longtime friend of Stacie’s! She and Albert went to elementary school together and reconnected several years ago. Albert and his wife, Sherry, now live in Young Harris, GA, not far from where we’ve been camping.

We met at their lovely home on a creek and then headed out for a tour of the area, traveling the hilly and winding roads of the North Georgia mountains.

One of our stops was Bell Mountain Park, high above beautiful Lake Chatuge. The mountaintop was preserved as a park, and its colorful painted rocks have become part of its quirky history after decades of painting and graffiti by locals and college students.

We climbed the stairs to the top, where the views were spectacular in every direction. We were so high that we could even watch black vultures soaring below us!

Afterward, we headed to Living Water Winery & Vineyard in Blairsville, where we enjoyed local w**e and b**r, live music, and some amazing panoramic views of the North Georgia mountains.

Another great day of exploring made even better by spending it with longtime friends! ❤️

We met up with longtime friends Scott and Martha Robinson, whom we’ve known since Tom’s early ranger days at Lloyd Beach State Park back in the 1980s. Scott and Tom worked together at the end of their Florida Park Service careers in the Directors Office, both retiring about the same time. We were also joined by Jan Fillyaw, who has long been part of our Florida State Park family through her late husband, John, who also worked in the Florida Park Service.

With all of them now living in or near Murphy, NC, getting together was a must! We had a great lunch catching up, reminiscing about old times, and sharing stories about our travels and adventures since we were last together.

Longtime friendships, lots of memories, plenty of laughter, and new stories to tell. Another great reunion along our travels! ❤️

It’s been more than 15 years since I’ve seen my friend Jesse Salinas. Jesse and I were colleagues when I worked at Volunteer Florida and he worked with the HandsOn Network in Atlanta. Whenever conferences or trainings brought us together, we always managed to have a great time!

Jesse now lives on a farm in North Georgia with a small herd of Highland cows. 🐮 We enjoyed visiting the farm, meeting the cows, learning about his pottery-making hobby, and seeing some of the many other projects that keep him busy. We enjoyed a delicious dinner that he and his sister-in-law Karen prepared. Yummo!

Mostly, it was just great to reconnect—sharing memories from our work together, catching up on everything that’s happened since, and talking about what might be ahead.

For Jesse, that future might eventually include a move to England. For the Linleys, it might include a European adventure.

Hopefully our paths won’t take another 15 years to cross. Who knows…maybe next time it’ll be in England! 🇬🇧❤️

We spent a week at Mile Creek County Park near Pickens, SC, on beautiful Lake Keowee—and we LOVE this campground! We’ve stayed here twice before, and with reasonable rates and every campsite offering a lake view and/or waterfront, it’s easy to see why it’s so popular.

We actually moved sites during the week. Our first was higher up with a panoramic lake view and beautiful sunrises every morning. 🌅 Our second was right on the water next to the boat dock. Perfect…if you BYOBoat! 😂

Stacie headed off for a couple of days with her high school girlfriends, while Tom stayed behind doing RV projects and enjoying the lake views.

There was one coed adventure when John and Sandy took us out on their boat for an afternoon of cruising, visiting a beautiful waterfall, and swimming. A perfect way to cool off in the late-summer heat! 🚤💦

The park is also great for walking and hiking. On one morning walk, we checked out EVERY campsite to decide which ones we’d like next time. The list got pretty long.

As part of my birthday celebration, Stacie and I visited the Upcountry History Museum in Greenville. It was great to learn so much about the history of the area. The exhibits, displays, and information were extraordinary, and we learned a lot.

The museum tells the story of South Carolina’s Upcountry, covering several centuries of history. We learned about the region’s early inhabitants and settlers, its growth and development, the importance of the textile industry, and the changes brought by the Civil Rights era. The combination of artifacts, photographs, stories, and interactive exhibits made the history come alive.

Another great stop during our time exploring Greenville—and a fun way to spend part of my birthday! 🎂❤️

One of the big bonuses of our travels is getting to meet up with longtime friends we don’t often get to see. ❤️

Our time in Piedmont included a visit with our high school friends Shellie (and son Hunter) and Kevin. We took a long walk through their neighborhood and nearby trails, enjoying the time together and getting caught up on life.

Another day, we met up with Cody and Heather and their sweet, growing family. They’re friends from Tallahassee, although we actually first met them while traveling in Alaska! We enjoyed a great brunch together, followed by a nice stroll along the riverfront in Greenville. On Sunday we went to an uplifting worshiped service with Heather

Beautiful places are always fun to visit, but reconnecting with friends along the way makes our travels even more special! ❤️🚐

We’re spending September traveling through Virginia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, making up for lost time since we weren’t able to travel much this summer.

We’ve stayed in some beautiful spots along the way, including a peaceful Hipcamp farm near my brother’s home in Virginia and a nice campground in Piedmont, South Carolina.

Both gave us a quiet and beautiful place to call home while traveling—and great home bases for visiting family and friends, exploring the area, and seeing the sights.

It sure feels good to be back on the road! ❤️🚐

We spent some time exploring the little town of Altavista, VA, and found Main Street Café & Coffee. It’s a cute coffee shop located in an old bank—and you can even sit and eat inside the original bank vault. How cool is that! ☕️

The food was great, and we really enjoyed talking with some of the locals. Everyone was so friendly and hospitable. We always enjoy those conversations when exploring small towns.

Of course, no small-town adventure would be complete without checking out the local thrift shops! 😂 We visited a few and came away with some bargain treasures.

Good food, friendly people, a little local history, and thrift-store bargains…our kind of day! ❤️

This morning we explored a new trail at Pittsylvania Wayside Park in Hurt, VA. It gave us a nice walking workout—especially for a couple of Florida flatlanders who aren’t used to much elevation! 😂

Thankfully, it was a little cooler under the shade of the trees. We came to Virginia hoping to escape some of the Florida heat, but so far the days have still been in the 90s! 🥵

The park was originally built by the CCC and has more recently been updated with additional amenities. We found the trails well marked and easy to follow, and the wooded setting made for a very pleasant hike.

A little history, some exercise, and time outdoors…a nice way to start the day! 🌳🥾
