A few months ago, my office manager told me something I had not seen.
For years, we had worked closely and stayed on the same page. But during a season of change, she felt me pulling ahead without bringing her with me.
I was surprised.
From my perspective, the business was moving forward. I was making changes, expanding responsibilities, and trying to build for the future.
But I had missed something important.
I was changing her role without giving her enough context. I was making decisions without checking how they were landing. And I had not given her enough ownership in shaping what came next.
I was so focused on leading the change that I failed to notice how the change was affecting someone right beside me.
It took several honest conversations to rebuild understanding, clarify expectations, and restore the sense of partnership we had lost.
We are in a much better place now. But the experience reminded me of something every leader needs to remember:
Seeing ahead is not only about recognizing what is coming next.
It is also about noticing whether the people beside you are prepared to move forward with you.
Who on your team may be adjusting to a change you have not stopped to talk about yet?
