Some opportunities are good.

That doesn't mean they're light.

Before you say yes, ask:

What does this add?
Who has to carry it?
What gets squeezed?
What has to change if we go?

The answer may still be yes.

Just make it a yes you've actually looked at.

Looking ahead doesn't mean becoming negative.

It doesn't mean finding 47 reasons why the idea won't work.

I like believing things can work. Leaders need that.

But sometimes after asking the hard questions, the answer is still:

Let's go.

The difference is you're moving with your eyes open.

You've thought about what could get harder.
You've considered who it affects.
You've named what needs to be ready.

That's what it looks like to see more before.

Some lessons are expensive.

Not always financially.

Sometimes they cost trust.
Energy.
Time.
Momentum.
Confidence.

So when you're facing a meaningful decision, pause long enough to ask:

Have I seen something like this before?

There may be a lesson you've already paid for that you don't need to pay for twice.

Write them down. As John Maxwell says, "Get a return on failure!"

Maybe you're like me. I'm a fast processor and an optimist. I see the opportunity, and it's "Bam. Let's go."

That combination has cost me more than once, because I saw the first move clearly and didn't look far enough past it.

So before the hire, the launch, the announcement, or the yes, I try to ask:

What happens next?

Then I ask it again.

You won't see everything. But you'll be a lot more ready than if you'd never asked.

"What am I missing?" is a good start.

And asking follow-up questions is usually where the great answers show up.

Why do you see it that way?
What are you worried this could create?
Who does this affect most?
What do you want me to understand before we move?

Don't defend anything too soon. Just get curious.

The goal isn't to get everyone to like you or your ideas. It's to understand the impact before you move on a decision.

We made a leadership decision earlier this year that taught me something.

It wasn't reckless. We talked it through. We honestly believed we were doing the right thing.

But we never asked the people it was going to land on.

And we ended up going back and doing it a different way. That took longer and hurt more than one conversation would have.

Here's the thing. I tend to process fast. I see the problem, connect the dots, and start moving toward an answer pretty quickly.

That’s useful, but it can also get me in trouble.

So now, before I move, I try to ask one question:

"What am I missing?"

Then I try to ask one more. Questions invite the conversation and conversation brings the understanding we need to lead well.
