On this day, 156 years ago, Dr. Maria Montessori was born in Italy where she would go on to break down barriers as a trailblazing female physician then educator, introducing a child-centered approach that revolutionized education worldwide. A steadfast advocate for women's rights and peace, her enduring legacy continues to inspire and her method continues to provide the foundation for Montessori schools around the globe. Today, children at CRA celebrated Montessori's birthday with a traditional Circle of the Sun ceremony. Happy Birthday, Maria Montessori!

Welcome back! It has been a joy to welcome returning students and new friends as we ease into the new school year. In these first couple weeks of school, our teachers are thoughtfully and intentionally establishing classroom routines and expectations. They are also facilitating community building activities to foster a sense of trust and belonging in each classroom community. We look forward to a beautiful year of growth ahead!

Today our staff came together at the Cincinnati Nature Center to prepare for the school year ahead. We shared the unique perspective we each bring to our work at CRA. We then reflected on how those perspectives shape our shared vision of fostering unique and inclusive Montessori classroom environments that guide the development of lifelong learners and peace makers. It is always wonderful to have this time, outside the school building, to strengthen our staff community.

Maria Montessori believed strongly in the importance of the prepared adult because we can only be our best for children if we slow down, fill our own cup, and work collaboratively as a teaching team. Montessori wrote, "The real preparation for education is a study of one's self. The training of the teacher who is to help life is something far more than the learning of ideas. It includes the training of character, it is a preparation of the spirit."

Last week, our Toddlers had a lemon tasting and made their own lemonade! 🍋
First, they each tried a piece of lemon. Many of the children described it as "sour!" Then they twisted the lemons on the juicer to squeeze out the juice and helped scoop the sugar into the pitcher. The children poured in water and talked about how the sugar helps make the sour lemon juice taste sweet. After coming in from the playground, they enjoyed a refreshing cup of their homemade lemonade. The children were excited to taste what they made and many said it was "sweet!" and even came back for seconds!
This activity supported fine motor skills through twisting, scooping and pouring, while also introducing simple science concepts like mixing, dissolving, and changing flavors.

We’ve got new fuzzy friends visiting our classrooms this month!
The children are learning about the butterfly’s life cycle, the anatomy of a butterfly, and what makes an insect an insect. They will observe the caterpillars' transformations as they form their chrysalides and turn into butterflies. When the time comes, the children gather for a butterfly release on the playground!🦋🌏
