Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies at Wabash College A Center of Distinction at Wabash College In 1970, a collective of students, faculty, and staff founded the Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies.

Originally a student initiative in 1967, the MXIBS became a cultural organization that fostered learning about people of African descent and enriched the students’ experience of Wabash College. The students chose to name the Institute after Malcolm X, who, until his death in 1965, addressed issues concerning the African American experience, particularly that of Black men in America. The members of the MXIBS strive to follow his example through educational events, brotherhood, and community service projects. The MXIBS was originally located at 416 West Wabash Avenue, serving as a “home away from home” for many students. The house became a starting point for Black Studies at Wabash College. In 2002, the MXIBS moved into its current facility on Crawford Street, which holds classrooms, the Jasmine Robinson Computer lab, recreational areas for the student organization, a barber shop, study space, and office spaces for the administration.
