Lifelong Learning Collaborative

Lifelong Learning Collaborative Building a vibrant and inclusive community of adult learners. Who are LLC members? Active, intellectually curious adults from many career paths.

A flexible schedule and a love of learning are the only prerequisites. Members plan and participate in peer-led classes and a variety of activities that offer academic challenges. Daytime classes meet once a week usually for ten weeks for two hours. Courses are held either in person at Temple Beth-El in Providence or on Zoom for easy access from anywhere. Courses address a wide-range of topics and

interests: art, music, literature, history, science, current events, economics. Peer coordinators develop the course syllabus and facilitate class sessions. Our model is collaborative learning. Class participation fosters a sense of community, with discussion often continuing over lunch or coffee. There are opportunities for members to attend cultural events, museums, theater, concerts, lectures. And there are two social events during the year, at the end of each semester.

A letter from the LLC President, Linda Shamoon: For more than ten years—that’s forty semesters, LLC’ers Mike & Kathy Webster have served as co-chairs of the Curriculum Committee. From semester to semester, they led the committee to find, inspire, help shape, develop, and guide the courses that we offer. The Websters did this demanding job tirelessly, admirably, and cheerfully. We, the leadership of LLC, are incredibly grateful for the years of exemplary work and outstanding leadership the Websters have given to LLC. LLC is pleased to announce that going forward Cathy Hurst and Donna Kerner will lead the committee. Cathy will serve as Chair and Donna will serve as Vice-Chair for Policy and Curriculum Management. Among the many tasks fulfilled by the Curriculum Committee, Chair Cathy Hurst will serve as the public face of the committee while also managing communications, committee calendars, committee reports and documents, making daily decisions, and focusing on the membership in general, the coordinators, the LLC admin, and LLC management. She will continue to manage the LLC course evaluation process. As Vice Chair for Policy and Curriculum Management, Donna Kerner will lead the committee in planning the curriculum going forward, including course categories, balancing offerings, developing new courses and new categories of courses, as well as working with liaisons and new coordinators, and leading committee meetings focused on strategy, planning, and curriculum development. Both Cathy and Donna are amply skilled and ready to serve the committee in their leader roles. Cathy Hurst spent half of her career as a marketing professional for a high-tech company, and half in academia, most recently as Asst. Prof. of Marketing, and Chair of the Undergraduate Management Program, at Simmons University. She has coordinated 12 courses in a variety of disciplines at LLC and serves on the Curriculum Committee as the liaison for religion, philosophy, interdisciplinary, and “all other” courses. She is the longest-serving member of the committee. Donna Kerner retired as Cole Professor of Anthropology at Wheaton College after 33 years of teaching. Since joining LLC, she has taken a range of courses and coordinated six classes that apply an anthropological perspective to a variety of topics. She leads the Special Projects Team on Collaborative Learning Skills for Members and serves on the Curriculum Committee as the liaison for Social Science courses. Thank you, Cathy and Donna, for taking the leadership of this important committee.

If you are an LLC coordinator, you get a lot of support from the Curriculum Committee! For example, twice a year we hold a coordinator workshop where coordinators can meet and mingle with each other, learn some new techniques to liven up their classes, hear about course evaluation comments (in summary), hear inspiring stories and class suggestions from experienced coordinators, brush up on their classroom technology skills, and share a light breakfast and lunch.

This fall, the event was held at the Shriners Center on August 21 from 8:30 to 2:30. The day before, members of the Curriculum Committee spent a couple of hours setting up Room 1 to support 33 guests!
