What do you do when mand training isn't producing the expected results?

A learner leaves the interaction, starts crying, or rapidly cycles through incorrect responses. How do you determine which components of instruction need adjustment?

On December 4, Steve Ward, joins ABAC for “UPJUMPPOPCORNTICKLE!!!” Problem Solving Issues with Mand Training for Early Language Learners.

This interactive, 3-hour workshop moves beyond rule-following to strengthen participants analytical repertoires. Through practical examples and case studies, participants will examine prerequisite skills, motivation, prompting, error correction, and instructor repertoires to identify what is working and what needs to change.

Designed for behavior analysts with experience in verbal behavior instruction, this intermediate- to advanced-level workshop emphasizes applying the basic principles of behavior analysis to challenging instructional situations.

How confident are we in the conclusions we draw from behavioral research?

On October 20, two 2025 award recipients address different measurement challenges in this APA Division 25 Award Series session.

Claire St. Peter, PhD, BCBA-D, will present "Building and Deploying Measures of Procedural Fidelity in Behavioral Research." Procedural fidelity—the extent to which a procedure is implemented as designed—is measured or reported less frequently than recommended in behavior-analytic research and practice. Dr. St. Peter will examine why fidelity measurement is often neglected and provide a step-by-step framework for building rigorous, feasible fidelity measures into behavioral research.

Anna Kate Edgemon, PhD, BCBA-D, will present "What Would You Do for a Date?: Using a Conjugate Preparation to Validate the Outcomes of a Demand Task on Preference." Her translational study examines correspondence between a Date Purchasing Task and a conjugate preparation for romantic partners, exploring an observable approach to validating hypothetical tasks when real-world observation is ethically or legally precluded.

Dr. St. Peter is the 2025 recipient of the ABAI Nathan H. Azrin Distinguished Contribution to Applied Behavior Analysis Award. Dr. Edgemon is the 2025 recipient of the SEAB Dissertation Award in Applied Research.

Interested in bringing NDBIs into your work with young children?

This fall, Mendy Minjarez, PhD, presents two ways to build knowledge and skills in Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs).

Option 1: Build the Foundation

Join us October 29 for a 3-hour introduction to the history, theory, empirical support, treatment strategies, and foundational principles of NDBIs.

Option 2: Move from Foundations to Application

Continue through November 19 with the complete 12-hour experience, including three additional weeks of NDBI in ACTION—guided training focused on implementation, clinical decision-making, instructional program design, treatment fidelity, troubleshooting, and program oversight.

Designed for behavior analysts and psychologists with a strong background in behavior analysis who are newer to NDBIs and interested in expanding their work with young children.

Understanding Determinants of Self-Controlled Choice and Promoting Healthy Behavior Change

Dr. Toegel will examine intertemporal choice and the variables that influence decision-making, connecting basic research with applied research aimed at improving health and prosperity among people with substance use disorders.

Lessons Learned in Impulsive Choice

Dr. Madden will examine impulsive choice and delay discounting, including research investigating episodic future thinking, delay exposure, and Pavlovian approaches to reducing impulsive choice.
