Nomadic Roots Studio uses ancient and traditional bookbinding methods combined with modern designs using high-quality, archival materials to produce one-of-a-kind utilitarian books. All books are lovingly slow-crafted using recycled and sustainably harvested natural-fiber papers, carefully selected to support socially responsible and eco-friendly practices. Nancy learned everything she knows about

bookbinding from her childhood bestie, Erin "Bean" Keane, innovative artist and soul sister. Erin introduced Nancy to Visual Journaling in 2009 and the art bombs have been dropping ever since. Check out Erin's amazing work at erinkeane.com

All books are envisioned, hand cut, pasted, pressed, torn, hole-punched, sewn, and embellished with great care by Nancy Appleby VanWinkle. Nancy is currently a fresh transplant to Craftsbury, Vermont, where she is taming her nomadic roots with her partner, Tony, and their two shoots, Greyson and Cole.

Penny Hewett of , incredible craftsperson and traditional skills educator, is making the trek from Vermont to the southeast, and we are thrilled to host her amazing workshop at our home in Candler next month! I cannot say enough great things about the experience of making a traditional black ash pack basket and the resulting work of art. I love my pack basket, and treasure the black ash tree that is sadly severely threatened by the Emerald Ash Borer. Penny harvests and proccess the trees in the traditional way to produce this classic basket that will last for generations. Come create with us!

There has been so much destruction in our area and so many people are hurting. We are super fortunate, and I’m asking that folks please connect us with people you know in Western North Carolina, so that we can help offer our space and resources to those who need it. Our hearts are broken.
After nearly 5 days of pioneer life, we have power and water -thank goodness we are on well water! So many of our community members are without, so please please come on over and take a shower, use our washing machine, fill up your water jugs. We also have a little apartment above our garage that is available, as well as guestrooms. Please take refuge with us… About 20 minutes south of downtown in Candler. We also have hummingbirds, butterflies, hilarious animal entertainment, and live music. Sending love and care to all of the folks out there hit by hurricane Helene ❤️‍🩹

Frosty mornings and gorgeous sunrises. This is the time of the year before the long dark sets in when we start to curl inward.
Charlotte is taking a well-deserved vacation, so no more baked goods for the season. Still a perfect day to venture out to the fermstand and fill up on some freshly fermented kombucha or grab a jar of Kimchi, kraut,or Curtido. We will stay open a bit longer.
Come on by today to the self-serve stand between 7 AM and 6 PM 🤍

Fermstand is stocked up and open today 8 AM to 6 PM! Even managed to get our hands on the last couple of jars of Lilly’s honey… Get them while you can.
We have a fresh, extra delicious batch of razzberry blues kombucha 😋 I may have drank nearly half the keg myself.
Tomorrow’s Friday! Charlotte Will be bringing out some good stuff:
Sourdough bread
Pumpkin chocolate chip cookies
Cranberry oatmeal cookies
Apple pie bars

It’s cabbage season! Aka: fresh ferments happening in the cave. We’ve got some exciting transitions coming for Nomadic Roots… more info to come on that.
In the meantime… Fridays are fabulous at the fermstand! Charlotte from will be bringing some fresh baked goods, including:
Sourdough loaves
Olive sourdough loaves
Tomato cheddar scones
Chocolate walnut cookies
…and (drumroll please)… chocolate chip pumpkin cake!
And if that isn’t enough to get you excited, Rebecca from has restocked the pastured chicken and duck eggs and the garlic 😋

It’s Friday at the farmstand and baked goods from are on their way!
We’ve got two new Seasonal flavors on tap: Apple cinnamon is the result of fresh pressed Cider and homemade maple syrup, topped off with a cinnamon stick! Grape symphony features grapes juiced from Paired with the subtle spiciness of fresh jalapeños and fresh ginger 🤤
Speaking of Peace of Earth Farm, Rebecca brought fresh chicken and duck eggs, along with delectable organic garlic. Get them while you can!
