Macy and Sheykiriah were correcting a mistake made from others in the past. Bees were left with an empty box on top of their hives and they filled it with wax, making it difficult, if not impossible, to work the bees. They were able to salvage the wax, pollen, brood, and some honey by securing the wax they removed into empty frames with rubber bands. The bees will connect these comb pieces to the frames and the rubber bands will be able to be removed. The girls did a great job and were even able to identify the queen during this process!

Yesterday, marked the end of lambing season at the farm for us. This season, we had a total of six new additions to the flock; 4 ewes and 2 ram lambs. All babies and moms are doing great. Our Animal and Vet. Science associates have already been hard at work making sure the new additions are healthy and happy.

These sheep will remain as part of our Animal Science program and provide valuable hands-on learning opportunities to our associates.

Today we turned trees into a raised bed!

We’re proud of these kids. The math, critical thinking, and problem solving involved in taking logs and converting it to dimensional lumber has been a great classroom activity.

Tomorrow this raised bed will be delivered to Clements Middle School for their students to grow herbs and vegetables.

We have a feeling this isn’t the last of these that we are going to produce.

The chicken coop (we fondly call it the pterodactyl cage) has been a long time coming.

Today we introduced 30 chicks to it and they are loving their time out of the brooder.

We certainly still have some improvements to make, but the coop was largely built by FFA members and they are looking forward to learning about the care needed for a backyard flock.

We are thankful that the Newton County Farm Bureau invited students from Newton County FFA Chapters to participate in Georgia Farm Bureau’s Legislative Day at the Capitol.

NCCA FFA members that participated included Mr. Tripp Marks and Ms. Ryah Sewell.

We would like to thank State Senators Tonya Anderson and Brian Strickland, as well as State Representative Clint Crowe for recognizing the students from the Senate floor as well as sitting with them at lunch and answering any questions they had about the legislative process.

We were also able to quickly visit with the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Commissioner Black’s office is always impressive.
