Looking forward to our students’ scores from the June 13 ACT!

Now taking students for the September ACT.

If the school day ACT scoring issue affected you, expect your score to stay the same when it is reissued June 2. A very few section scores will go up by one or two points. Even if one section score goes up by one point, that would not increase your composite.

When a student knows how to confidently approach individual item types on the ACT test, their scores soar.

There’s a piece of ACT advice that gets repeated constantly:
“When in doubt, pick the shortest answer.”

I’ve heard tutors say it. I’ve seen it in prep books. Parents pass it along like it’s gospel.

It’s wrong.

I actually counted. The shortest answer is correct about 25% of the time on ACT English.

There are 4 answer choices per question. That means following this advice is statistically the same as guessing randomly. You’d do just as well closing your eyes and picking.

So what should students do instead?

The ACT English section is fundamentally an editing test. It’s asking: which answer makes this sentence or paragraph function most clearly and correctly in context?

That means the right answer depends on the sentence around it, the paragraph around it, and what the question is actually testing.

The students who score highest on English aren’t picking based on length. They’re reading the surrounding text, identifying what the question is really asking, and eliminating answers that introduce new errors.

That’s a skill. And it’s teachable.
If your student is using the “shortest answer” rule — they’re leaving points on the table every single time.

The English college ready score Is 18. I have helped many students Increase their English score by 6-10 points. That’s not typical, but it happens often enough to mention it. That’s because much of the enhanced test Is still grammar rules that can be learned.
