We, at the Alleghany Highlands Genealogical Society, is looking for any historical information concerning the Longdale United Methodist Church that is no longer being used as a church. We are particularly wanting to scan old church records. Example: church rolls, deaths, weddings, baptisms, etc. We are trying to preserve these records of churches that are no longer existing as a place of worship. We have scanned the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church records from Falling Springs and the Epworth United Methodist Church records from Selma so far. Any help anyone can give us, would be appreciated.

50th Annual Boggs Reunion

Come visit our booth today at the Juneteenth celebration at the Jeter- Watson Park on Pine Street. There are many activities going on there today to celebrate Juneteenth. You don't want to miss this.

We also will have a booth tomorrow at the Moose Park, just outside of Covington. Please stop by and see what we have to offer.

Both events we will be taking orders for Wreaths Across America project. This will be for families to purchase wreaths to be placed on their veterans graves in Cedar Hill Cemetery on December 19th. We also accept donations to help place wreaths on other veterans graves that don't have family. You can also place an order and pick up your wreath to take to another cemetery. Wreaths Across America is to REMEMBER the fallen, HONOR those who serve, and TEACH the next generation the value of freedom.

We remember...

The Normandy landings were the landing operations and associated airborne operations on 6 June 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during the Second World War. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it is the largest seaborne invasion in history.

The D-Day operation of June 6, 1944, brought together the land, air, and sea forces of the allied armies in what became known as the largest amphibious invasion in military history. The operation, given the codename OVERLORD, delivered five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy, France. The beaches were given the code names UTAH, OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO, and SWORD. The invasion force included 7,000 ships and landing craft manned by over 195,000 naval personnel from eight allied countries. Almost 133,000 troops from the United States, the British Commonwealth, and their allies, landed on D-Day. Casualties from these countries during the landing numbered 10,300. By June 30, over 850,000 men, 148,000 vehicles, and 570,000 tons of supplies had landed on the Normandy shores. Fighting by the brave soldiers, sailors, and airmen of the allied forces western front, and Russian forces on the eastern front, led to the defeat of German N**i forces. On May 7, 1945, German General Alfred Jodl signed an unconditional surrender at Reims, France.

In preparation for the 90th Anniversary of Douthat CCC Camp, the society is asking that anyone that has any information, pictures, documents, newsletters, etc. pertaining to the CCC Camp to please share with us, so we may scan them. You also may e-mail them to us at: [email protected]. We wish to thank all those that have e-mailed names of their families that worked there. We are still looking for names of other that worked there. Thank you for any help you can give us.
