From future astronauts (last month with HS students) to future Space Health researchers next week (professors, industry partners and post-doc fellows) …
I am so excited to continue this work with my new co-PI, Dr. Sara Torres for LBJ SHIP LBJ Institute for STEM Education and Research College of Education - Texas State University
We have planned, coordinated and will host 20 researchers from around the country at Johnson Space Center next week in partnership with Translational Research in Space Health (Baylor School of Medicine), NASA OSTEM and NASA Human Research Program.
Immersion Pilot Program!!
Details:
Dr. Kristina Collins has been awarded additional funding of $100,005 for three months by the Baylor School of Medicine Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH). This funding will support Dr. Collins' project, "Lyndon B. Johnson Institute for STEM Education and Research Space Health Inclusion Partnership" (LBJ SHIP), which aims to increase engagement from underrepresented groups in the field of space health research. The project's primary objective is to establish an infrastructure that attracts and sustains a broader network of underrepresented and underutilized post-doctoral and early-career research professionals.
This will help to create a space health community that is more inclusive and representative of the general population. LBJ SHIP will provide a range of development and engagement opportunities, such as culturally responsive mentoring training, a space health research immersion institute, and online micro-credentials related to the challenges of humans in space.”

In the infamous words of THE DJ “The Fly Joc” Tom Joyner: I know we don’t do shout outs BUT if we did …
I would have to make note of an exemplary team of STEM faculty and educators that I work with. Shout out to our Year 1 FAMA team for all of the hard work over the course of the school year that culminated with a fabulous 1-week on-campus overnight residential program hosted in partnership with LBJ Institute for STEM Education and Research, College of Education - Texas State University and of Engineering - Texas State.
Over the course of the year we connected with the educators, families, and students of 6 different school districts around the NASA MUREP thematic capstone: “GLOBAL HYDROLOGY”, training youth to be citizen scientist to the benefit of their own community!! We asked for a village and the village showed up!! Thank you thank Thank you!!!
Special Shout out and thank you to our leadership team:
Dr. Sara Torres (Program Manager)
Dr. Shelly Forsythe ( Y1 Curriulum Specialist)
Dr. Anthony Torres (CO-PI; Summer Curriculum Coordinator)
Lisa Hanson (Content specialist; Volunteer)
Angie Behnke (Program Assistant)
Susan Kohler (NASA/ GLOBE Coordinator)
