Our Agriculture classes worked for over two weeks to research growing needs and greenhouse components suited for specific plants and climates of their choice. They had to design systems for managing temperature, sunlight, humidity levels, ventilation, watering, and more — all tailored to the plants they chose to “grow”. 🌱 Some students chose to craft a greenhouse plan for commercial use, while others opted for personal use. One group even designed their greenhouse to be a component of an Agricultural Education program, used for educational purposes, demonstrations, and even fundraisers to benefit FFA.

After the plans were finalized, students had to then BUILD these greenhouses to scale, including moving parts. One group had both a working fan for ventilation, and an automated misting system that ACTUALLY moved. Another group designed an adjacent pasture, where manure could be collected and turned into nutrients for the plants in the greenhouse.

During presentations, audience members were invited to ask specific questions about the presenting group’s design. For instance, “Why did you choose a flat roof? What’s the solution when rain or snow accumulates?” or “You said your greenhouse is set in a hot climate. Is the roofing made of a material that diffuses heat so as not to scorch the plants?”. Discussions were conducted according to Robert’s Rules of Order, the FFA Gold Standard for communications of this nature, so that everyone stayed respectful and on-topic.

This was a great experience for all! 🙌 Even students who need frequent redirecting and reminders about putting devices away stayed focused and busy throughout the duration of this project.

Join us in congratulating our 2022 GHP Nominees! 🎉 The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) is a residential summer program for skilled, knowledgeable, and talented high school sophomores and juniors. GHP offers instruction that is significantly different from the typical high school classroom and is designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders.

GHP is held in mid-summer (mid-June to mid-July) as a residential educational experience on a college or university campus. Students attend classes in the mornings and afternoons in specific areas of study, and they participate in a wide variety of social and instructional opportunities every evening. Meals and rooms are provided by the program. The only required and expected costs to the students are: travel expenses to and from the semifinalist event and host campus; a few basic supplies for classes and dorm rooms; and spending money as desired during the program.

Recently, our 1st Grade students enjoyed a trip to the aquarium! 🐠🐬

Student are currently learning how to obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the basic needs of plants and animals. They're also learning about the physical features of the animals they saw and how they survive in their environment! How fun!
