It's orb-weaver season! The mist from Tuesday morning helped highlight these three webs (can you spot the second web in the second image?). As we trim the lavender, we'll work around these webs.

A couple of weeks post burn we can see green beginning to grow back. Two of the species beginning to leaf out are western buttercup (Ranunculus occidentalis) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium). Dawn and Peg have scattered more yarrow seeds on the burn area.
You can also see the disturbances in the soil caused by voles and other creatures, .

We are looking forward to having a booth at the Coupeville Farmers Market!
We'll be selling trees, shrubs, and late blooming native perennials, and we'll have a game for the Penny Carnival.

Most of the time, when staff or volunteers find mantises at PRI, they are looking for food. But this one, found on one of our Parker Road beds, managed to grab a snack before their picture was taken.

Lana, our restoration ecologist, had a chance to light part of our prairie on fire yesterday.
Thank you to Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue and Whidbey Camano Land Trust for helping make this restoration project possible.
Thank you to Whidbey Environmental Action Network, Coast Salish Youth Coalition and others for coming out and sharing this special activity with us.

PUBLIC NOTICE: Prescribed fire tomorrow at Pacific Rim Institute and Whidbey Camano Land Trust Admiralty Inlet Preserve.

We're super excited that we are able to burn part of our prairie for environmental stewardship and fire preparedness! The rare native species found in our prairie thrive when they receive a little fire, and this also provides an opportunity for our local fire fighters to train.

Community Notice | Prescribed Fire Scheduled 🔥

A prescribed burn is scheduled for tomorrow, September 10, from approximately 10 AM–4 PM at the Admiralty Inlet Natural Area Preserve and Pacific Rim Institute.

Community members in the surrounding area may see or smell smoke during burn operations.

Please note that timing is weather-dependent and subject to change.
